Depression The Fahrenheit society Analysis 1

In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury one topic of interest is depression. In the book many of the characters experience depression or show it. For example in the book Mildred said “That's the good part about dying; when you’ve got nothing to lose.”(Bradbury 81) Here she is talking about thats theres nothing in life to care about since you are dying already. And again Montag’s wife was suspected of taking pills to kill herself. Montag asked her “ You took all of your pills in your bottle last night.”( Bradbury 17) when she was only supposed to take two she then took the whole bottle. And then later on Montag was talking about if she was trying to overdose and that she was so overdosed she kept taking them. And in the society many people didn’t care about their life and were voluntarily dying. Like when the fake Montag was shot someone volunteered and again when an old lady had secret books and they burned her house down and she refused to leave and was burnt to death. Also a part of the depression that the people represent is that they don’t socialize with each other. For example someone said “I’m antisocial, they say. I don’t mix. It's so strange.” (Bradbury 26) This could say that they call each other out for feeling different and making each other feel bad. One symbol is the fire this can relate to the part of depression because the fire represents death and torture. This could cause depression because when people are getting killed then the families mourn the death and will sometimes put themselves for the blame. And this will cause depression in the people. Another symbol is the books. The books represent knowledge and incitement. This relates to the book because the community doesn’t have the knowledge to know any better from right to wrong so they think that what they say doesn’t mean anything when it is making the people feel worse and that they are always wrong.

Montags Mindset Analysis 2

In the book one character in particular stood out to me the most. That character was Montag. Throughout the book Montag always somehow talked about death or his own death. For example he said “I might be dead by noon.” (Bradbury 125). This could support that he wanted to kill himself from depression or just not caring anymore. Or this could be a sign that he is a symbol of death. This could be supported because another time in the book it stated “In the middle of crying Montag knew the truth. Beatty wanted to die.”(Bradbury 116). And again when it stated “ The Captains dead. He heard your voice, he was going to trace it. I killed him with the flamethrower.”(Bradbury 124). At this part of the book Montag was held responsible for the death of the Captain since the voice sounded like his. This is another example on how Montag is a symbol of death. Another symbol is Mildred's bedroom. Mildreds bedroom was where she tried to kill herself and and it was dark and grey. Which again this means that it was also a tribution to Montag's actions being around mildred and having her and her room all depressing. And with Mildred being depressed she could put her feeling all on to Montag since she claimed him as the problem.

Depression in our Society Research 1

In both the book and our society depression is expressed in many ways that are the same. Many researchers claim that if one person is depressed and is around others that it could also affect them. And in the book this is shown for example Mildred is very depressed in the book and from Montag being around him he now has become depressed. For example at home, depressed people sometimes lack interest in or concern for their family and friends ( Bjornlund). Studies show that stressful and traumatic events like death and medical issues can factor into depression (Depression). And in the book Mildred had medical issues causing her depression and Montag had the loss of loved ones and friends. Also a part of anxiety fits into this some of the people are worrying that their not doing what's right and questioning themselves and what they believe in. “Chronic, exaggerated worry about everyday routine life events and activities, lasting at least six months; almost always anticipating the worst even though there is little reason to expect it”(Medicare). Another example is that Psychologists from Harvard University have shown that we're happiest when our minds are firmly rooted in the present moment, and when our minds wander, it can make us wistful, anxious, and unhappy. (Surprising). This could be a factor of why the community in the book were never happy because they weren't open to knowledge and wondering and they were always attached to the tvs. Basically doing anything in excess, especially online can be a sign of depression. “Several studies confirm that people who go online compulsively and have more virtual social interactions than real ones may be depressed. They may feel deprived of real human companionship and/or may be using the online world to escape from their thoughts and feelings.” (Surprising). And in the book the families would watch tv and wouldn’t react with one another and was instead attached to the tvs much like we are today. “People with depression cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. There is some evidence that, painful as depression is, it serves a positive purpose, bringing with it ways of thinking that force people to focus on problems as a prelude to solving them”.(Psychology). And in the book this could be seen as the burning of the books and our society it could be seen as working.

Depression in people today Research 2

One contributor to the depression could be the technology and in the book and our community it can be noticed. “Dissatisfaction with one’s social network”(depression). In today's society and the Fahrenheit 451 society the people would put something on the news or social media to make themselves feel better so it didn’t make them feel so bad and us people do that today. While Internet addiction and depression are separate diagnoses, they often overlap. "The quest for a short-term boost is a common coping mechanism,"(Surprising). Other studies also show that people that are more attached to their phones and televisions are more likely to be depressed than other people because it makes them feel like a part of something. (Bjornlund) Also studies show that people that post pictures on their profiles do it for the likes so they feel better about themselves and that there important to someone.(Neighmond). And this could also put in as people not being social “At home. Depressed people sometimes lack interest in their family and friends”(Bjornlund). And with our society almost everyone is on their phones or watching tv and never interact with others. And with the electronics were don’t talk with families and are more concentrated on how we are. Meanwhile, she says, the surveys suggested that hours spent in face-to-face activities like sports, parties, even just going to the mall with friends seemed to be less depressed than others that don't( Neighmond). And in the Fahrenheit 451 society they never interacted with each other and were not involved with anything. This all could be why our generation and the Fahrenheit 451 society could have so many problems with depression.
