Walking into to the classroom i was extremely nervous, i didn't know anyone in my class and i wasn't sure how the workshop was going to be run. It surprised me how fun i found it and it helped me realise how inclusive drama, and the arts are in general. Some people in my class have a strong arts background from participating in various plays, performances and creating films, whilst others had no background or interest in the arts. Despite this everyone actively participated in the activities and looked like they were enjoying it.

Due to it being a public holiday our class this week was online. we were given activities to in relation to drama, specifically spoken drama. Having to do this lesson online i found a bit tricky due to not being able to discuss tasks with my peers. when choosing a poem that children in year 3-4 could recite i chose 'When Tillie Ate the Chilli' due to its humorous nature. I think getting a class to read a poem together and come up with actions to match, would foster collaboration and spark creativity in students.

This week our main drama focus was mime, which I found interesting. We did an activity in groups of three involving a balloon and bin bag which everyone got really involved in. This activity is one example of how drama, and the arts in general, can foster collaboration and cooperation. I think drama encourages people to work together, listen to others’ ideas and then incorporate everyone’s ideas into a final performance or act. This workshop I was feeling a lot more confident than first, but I was still nervous and a little bit hesitant to speak up as I was scared I was going to embarrass myself. Although I pushed through these feelings as I know I learn better when I’m actively involved and doing more hands-on activities. From what I’ve gathered over the past 3 weeks I think most people learn more from drama by participating in activities and watching others do these activities. I think students learn a lot by symbolically representing their world through drama. Due to the lack of limits on drama, students can imagine they are from any time, or in any part of the world, helping them learn about history, infer what the future may be like, and understand other cultures.

This week was our online week and we focused on media arts. I found it interesting learning about all the various camera angles (example of a long shot zooming in to a close up above), lighting, and technical codes used for certain purposes. I think media arts is one of the most relevant subjects to students as they are constantly consuming media both subconsciously and consciously. Knowing this, I think it is such a vital subject to teach students, especially educating them on how to stay safe on the internet and when using various equipment.

My favourite activity overall was in the dance module when we worked in groups to create two counts of 8. I found it really entertaining as my group worked well and came up with lots of creative ideas. When working together as a group to create an arts performance we had a lot of fun coming up with ideas and working together. Everyone in the group got along well which made it a lot easier. One of my favourite moments was when we all lined up next to each other and took a photo to compare our heights to then figure out where we were going to pattern ourselves in the dance section (pictured above). I’m excited to try many of the activities like the one when students use a bin bag and create a person out of it, imagining different scenarios with it.

This week’s class was our first lesson on dance, which I was extremely excited for because I am a dancer. I was interested to see how teaching and using dance would be different in a primary school setting compared to an outer school environment. Dance is an expressive learning process that educators can use to help their students express their own emotions or just one specific emotion, specific storylines and themes. Students can use all parts or a limited number of body parts to help them express what they are aiming too. Practical activities such as the one done in pairs where a body part is chosen that must be touching and students are asked to create a pose or statue, helps encourage students to think about their body and what they can do with it to express thoughts, feelings or themes. Over the past six weeks I’ve realised there are so many misconceptions about the arts in general. For example, there are attitudes that boys shouldn’t dance and drama is only about performing a plays in front of everyone. I think it’s vital as an educator to shut down these misconceptions, encourage students to get involved in activities and inform them the arts is so much more than what most of them will know and if they try it majority of them will enjoy it.
