The Hunger Games

A major theme in Lord of the Flies is civilization vs savagery, which basically means that if there is no set of rules or laws in place, humans will become evil and barbaric. The theme also relates to the The Hunger Games. Both stories are about survival. The character of Katniss is similar to the character of Ralph in that they are both stranded in the wilderness with other children and get involved in violent situations. In Lord of the Flies, the kids are stuck on an island after a plane crash. In The Hunger Games, the characters are placed into an arena with limited food and resources and are forced to fight to the death. So, in both novels, the characters end up killing others in order to stay alive. In The Hunger Games, Katniss kills the boy from District 1 who speared Rue, and in Lord of the Flies, the children kill Simon after mistaking him for the beast. Both of these stories demonstrate how children can turn into wild savages if there is nothing preventing from doing so.

The Simpsons

The theme of mankind being inherently evil is seen throughout Lord of the Flies. For example, when the boys kill Simon after mistaking him for the beast, they feel no remorse whatsoever. They are also not disturbed by Piggy's death since Jack's hunters purposely kill him. The theme is also explored in the episode of The Simpsons titled "Das Bus". The plot of the episode is extremely similar to the plot of Lord of the Flies. In the episode, a group of students are left stranded on an island after a bus accident. The kids manage to survive on snack food items left on the bus until they wake up the next morning to find that all of the food is gone. Everyone suspects that Milhouse ate the remaining snacks due to his nacho cheese breath and large stomach. Because the children are upset, they chase Milhouse into a cave and attempt to murder him; however, after a trial by Bart and Lisa, it is revealed that it was actually a wild boar who ate the snacks, not Milhouse. So, they decide to kill the boar and eat it. The fact that the children in both stories would immediately be willing to kill another person with absolutely no hesitation shows that they are naturally violent savages.

Lost

In Lord of The Flies, William Golding explores how fear of the unknown can change people. For example, there is an imaginary beast that frightens all of the boys on the island. The boys go as far as to violently murder Simon because they fear that he is the beast, when in reality is no actual beast, but rather a beast that exists in all of them. The setting and plot of the TV show Lost are extremely similar to Lord of the Flies as it also involves a plane crash that leaves a group of survivors stranded on an island. It also includes a supernatural monster that takes over the survivors. The fear of the monster causes the survivors to become afraid of the forest and stay on the beach in order to avoid encountering it. In Lost, John Locke regains his ability to walk, so he believes that the island is supernatural and has the power to work miracles. By telling about the miracle, he is able to gain the trust of Walt. Similarly, in Lord of the Flies, Jack uses the beast to make the other boys respect him. Lord of the Flies and Lost both use supernatural monsters to show how fear can negatively affect people's lives.

Kim Jong-il

One of the themes in Lord of the Flies is abuse of power. In the story, Jack becomes the chief and starts violently beating the boys in order to instill fear in them. By doing this, he is able to control the group and they do not ever question his orders due to their fear of him. Jack in Lord of the Flies is comparable to the former North Korean dictator, Kim Jong il. Kim Jong il used his power to commit several immoral acts. One of the most notable examples is when he kidnapped Choi Eun-hee, a South Korean actress and her husband who was a film director, Shin Sang-ok. He ordered these kidnappings because he wanted to establish North Korea's film industry. The two were then imprisoned for about four years. They made six movies before escaping. So, both Kim Jong Il and Jack from Lord of the Flies demonstrate how people in authority use their power to their advantage and often end up becoming corrupt.

A teenager that was brutally tortured by a gang of children strongly resembles Piggy in Lord of the Flies. The 15-year-old victim was hit with planks and had cigarettes shoved up his nose. One of the tormentors was a 14-year-old girl who lured the victim into a woodland laid where the gang punched him, kicked him, and spat on him. They then lashed him with branches, urinated on him, and continued to make death threats toward him. According to prosecutor James Keeley, “The gang showed him no pity and told him to shut up, otherwise they were going to kill him. They placed him in a ditch with pieces of wood over him as perhaps a makeshift grave”. The victim apparently had learning difficulties and was attending a special school to deal with them. In Lord of The Flies, Piggy was also bullied and tortured by the rest of the gang. The fact that the boys call him Piggy when he clearly states that he does not like being called that shows that the boys have very little respect for him. He also faces physical abuse when Jack takes off his glasses and punches him in the stomach. He is eventually murdered after Roger pushes a large boulder down the mountainside that falls on him and smashes him. So, the article and Lord of the Flies both show that if children are left unattended, they can become extremely violent toward each other.
