In general, culture shock is a term used for the experiences people have when living in another country which may be astonishing and sometimes uncomfortable. According to the reading text, there are four stages of culture shock including Honeymoon, Rejection, Adjustment and reorientation and Adaptation. Each stages describe specific emotions people have as well as their tendency to solve problems while experiencing the culture. Eventually, people will get used to their new lives and no longer be in a culture shock.

Describing my hometown

I am currently living in Ho Chi Minh city, but I come from a small village in Dien Ban, Quang Nam. It is located on the outskirts of the central region. Therefore, there aren't many houses as well as buildings. Moreover, it is hard to find such a shopping mall convenience store, so we usually go to the local market for goods. For me, I really enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as it isn't as noisy as living in the city. The place where I live is surrounded with trees, which makes the weather cooler in the summer. In addition, the people there are not only heart-warming but also hospitable towards their neighbors and tourists. I am looking forward to visiting my hometown when I have time.

After the Speaking lesson, I find that it is hard for me to find ideas for the speech. I tend to list things instead of giving reasons or examples. Moreover, I don't speak fluently as I repeat words I used before.

Describing an interesting news story

I don't watch news on television usually due to my time schedule, but recently, I found a new that caught my attraction while surfing on the Internet. It was a story about a Vietnamese girl who got into Tsinghua university, one of the best universities in the world. The special thing is that she actually took a gap year to prepare for her application. From my perspective, not everyone is brave enough to take a year off from colleges or universities. Therefore, she must have planned really well so that she could get a scholarship to her dream school. Reading this story has motivated me a lot and also encouraged me to study harder. Moreover, I realized that gap year sometimes can give you more opportunities to study abroad.

Listening: I didn't hear the speakers really well as I lost concentration. I should be able to focus on the speeches so that I can do better.

Speaking: I still repeated words and mispronounced sometimes.

'Media' video Summary

The video explained how media can have great influence on the way we think and behave. Stereotypes of black people was mentioned to prove that storytellers can lead their viewers to negative understanding by showing racial assumptions in a wide range of movies. This continued to form colourism in many places. The speaker emphasized awareness as movies or even advertisements can cause misunderstandings as well as racist perceptions nowadays.

Intonation video

In the video, different functions of intonation are showed as well as the importance of it. First of all, we can express various emotions by changing the intonation. Intonation patterns such as rising or falling tone help the listener know if the sentence has already finished. For example, if you put rising tone at the end of a phrase, they will think that you have more things to say. By contrast, falling tone will assure that the sentence has ended. Moving onto the second role, intonation can also emphasize the main information. This make it much easier for us to understand what we are talking about. To be clearer, rising and falling tone are used to mention a new and old information respectively. Moreover, when you do not understand the sentences thoroughly, using intonation patterns enable you to show interrogation. Finally, intonation illustrates a variety of conditions and feelings.

Of course I do. After watching the video, I understand that intonation plays an important role in speaking. Therefore, I will practice more on using intonation as well as watching more videos about how to use intonation patterns in the right way.
