The monks and Monasteries set up buildings such as schools, hospitals, and houses for the sick and poor people. Some of them became missionaries and others continued to maintain their knowledge by learning.

Popes, Politics, and Power

 Popes had all the power in religion. It was their job to teach how to live and pray within the religion. The church had individual power because it created its own laws and courts. The church excommunicated the people who did not obey them. The worst punishment was interdict, it was the act of not being able to perform religious services within the kings land.

Spread of Christianity

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the spread of Christianity in Europe began.Christianity was spread across the entire country of Europe, during the Middle Ages, that merchants, missionaries, and soldiers carried out. It was based on the scriptures that recounted life of the Christ and his disciples. It was aided by Christian groups and institutions that promoted Christian beliefs. Among the most important with a monasteries, or places where people could dedicate their lives to prayer and meditation.

Crusades

Crusades were a series of holy wars that were started by popes. Pope Urban II issued a call for a crusade to gain control of the Holy Land. There were many different goals of the crusades.Some of the economic goals include: merchants profited by making cash loans to finance the journey and that they hoped to win control of key trade routes to India, Southeast Asia, and China from Muslim traders. Some of the social goals were to have kings, while the church saw the Crusades as an opportunity to get rid of quarrelsome knights who fought each other and the younger were looking for land as well as a position in society or for adventure. Lastly, the political goals were the pope wanting to reclaim Palestine and reunite Christendom, which had split into Eastern and Western branches in 1054. The Crusades provoked the weakening of the feudal system as many of the hereditary lords died with their sons during the campaigns. With no one left to inherit, the lands were returned to the Crown. Much of the ambition was to just loot the place instead of saving it. Sometimes there was a success and the crusaders held it but it was never held for very long. Eventually, the Crusaders were kicked out. Last, we still feel the effects of this effort. Hence a successful failure.
