Your experience of peer support by Liam

The aim of this activity is to start thinking about peer support and linking the content of the chapter with your own experiences as a learner. Return to the padlet every now and again. Consider your response in padlet as well as the responses of your peers, are there any clear themes that have emerged about experiences that were positive or negative? Were there any key facilitators or barriers? Take a few notes as you reflect on this question.

Clinical study group- was the same group throughout medical school. Promoted my learning in that it: 1) Stimulated my sense of competition- wanted to do better than others in the group.2) Helped me to gauge where I was compared to my peers, so was reassuring to me that I was doing the same or better. 3) could see other ways in which group members approached tasks like clinical history-taking and could then do it the same way. 4) always had a willing buddy with whom to practice history taking or clinical examination 5) gave me a sense of familiarity as the groups members never changed through-out the five years at medical school. Can't think of any way in which learning was hindered. There was no sense of belonging though. We did not do any tasks as a group to achieve a goal. Did no tasks that competed with other groups. We were different personalities with different friend groups so there was no sense of cohesiveness as a group outside of the learning sphere.

I refer here mainly about my learning during residency. Peer support promoted my learning because we were living the same situations/difficulties/reality. Sharing with colleagues help me cope with difficult situations, helped me understand I was not the only one experiencing them. It gave me a sense of belonging and made the situations easier to go through and easier to reflect on.
As for peer learning, as was said previously, it promoted my internal and external motivation to learn. It helped me compare where I was standing in terms of what I knew and what I needed to learn. By discussing with peers, you can also use their good strategies.

My learning was sometimes hindered when I compared myself with others that were really ahead of me in knowledge or skills. I had a hard time not denigrating myself, thinking I wasn't good enough.
As was already mentionned, working with a peer who has a negative attitude towards the task or the team or the clinicians can also hinder the learning experience
