Around 3500 b.c. scribes pressed wedge shaped objects into clay to record information, this eventually became known as writing. This first language was called "Cuneiform", and it means wedge shaped. Lastly Over time the Sumerians invented the pictograph which were pictures that represented objects.

One of the many agricultural techniques in Mesopotamia was irrigation. Irrigation helped them build dams and water plants and crops. Lastly they also use the plow which made digging or poking holes for seeds much easier. With that, the plow also loosened the soil and roots so crops could grow more quickly.

In order to stay in power the kings had to have the support of the priest and their influence. The Sumerians believed that the gods talked to them through the priests. Another way the kings stayed in power in Sumer was that the priests told the people that the gods had chosen the kings and sent them down from heaven. The kings and priest worked together and made ceremonies that supported royal power. After a while the priests became very powerful.

One of the many features of the Sumerian society was three social classes. The upper class consisted of a ruler, his top officials, priests, large landowners, and wealthy merchants. The middle class consisted of average people like farmers and skilled workers. The lowest class consisted of mostly slaves which usually worked for the upper class. This order was supported by the Sumerian Governments and religion.

Some of the syllables the scribes used for writing was the Sumerian word arrow, which was pronounced tih. Also the Scribes used Pictographs which represented objects and could record the number of fish they caught. The Scribes later invented the alphabet which was a small set of letters or symbols that each stood for a single sound. Finally, the Scribes were people in Mesopotamia who were trained to write and keep records in ancient times.
