It’s interesting to point out that placing value on different aspects of yourself can alter your view of yourself. As a future counselor, I want to remain positive and remember that even in hard times, that I’m sure will occur, I am doing my best. Quantifying value on different aspects of yourself can probably be very self reflective and self assuring.

It’s important to again, understand the connection between beliefs and goals as a future counselor. If a student isn’t reaching certain goals, perhaps getting a feel for their own belief system first might help pinpoint the actual problem.

As a future counselor, I will also be working with teachers. Understanding that beliefs are tied to people’s sense of self is a good reminder to make sure I speak effectively and without bias, understanding bringing up certain topics might make teachers feel uncomfortable.

“Opportunity for growth rather than as a threat” really stood out to me. As a future counselor, understanding if teachers or someone gets defensive, it probably means that they feel threatened, so taking a step back and reminding them it is about growth opportunity, versus criticism or belittling.
