This collection pad looks at Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis. This social theory looks at the whole world being a stage and how we are all actors, whether we show an onstage performance or a backstage on. Ultimately Goffman is saying that who we are depends on who we are interacting with and where we are. He talks about “the spoiled identity” where we seek to avoid disruption to our social role and avoid the attachment of stigma by being deemed a failed member of society.

We can alter our performance to fit into different situation making us preoccupied with social order and control. A main critism of this theory is that the fleshy, material body disappears under the banner of societal expectation.

In this collection I will look at the different performance people undergo in society to please others. This may mean impression management (eg. wearing appropriate clothes in certain situations), interaction management (eg. avoiding embarrassment and conforming to socially accepted roles), or body idioms (eg. how we move or speak or act).

Every great dramatic work evolves due to conflict. Conflict allows the character to evolve, to explore and grow leading to transformations. Conflicts in our lives grow us; grow our story to another level. In Emily Dickinson’s poem entitled “The Soul Selects Her Own Society - “The Soul can be viewed in the light that it selects because the “body” cannot; that the body is fated by birth, family, society. When you write your own script you are empowered to be the true hero in your own story and create your own history.

In all good dramas, the characters wear masks. The masks hide their true identities, their shadows.

What mask is covering your light, your true identity, your shadows?

Goffman bases his performance on what is 'Normal" in society. But is there really any normal.
Even Foucalt's Clinical Gaze is based on continued surveillance and correcting oneself on the basis of what is normal.
This attainment of being 'normal' forces people unknowingly sometimes to conform to what society expects of them. But how do these expectations arise? Are they political? or Social? or are they just a form of Control by the powers that be....... whoever they are
