I act like myself and am accepted for who I am because diversity is special and important. It's important to always be yourself and contribute to diversity and individualism. Another value in our culture that is important to me is hard work/ and consistency. These things have shown me I can do a little of things I want to accomplish for my life. Only I can achieve these things for myself.

Growing up I have always been surrounded by individuals that work extremely hard to reach their goals. That has always been such an inspiration for me to do the same. I think working hard is a great value, but rest days are just important! I believe the USA is diverse in many ways and that allows room for self discovery. I was raised understanding the value of family, and having a range of family traditions.

My name is Jaden Blanton, and I am pleased to be communicating with you all! Being born in the United States has granted my family many things. My grandmother was from Korea, and being in the U.S. helped her be able to run her own store. This allowed our family to be well known in our community. Even still, it's rare that I don't find people who know me because of my families' store. At a young age being raised in a convenience store, I heard many accents. I was able to learn just how vast and diverse humans could be at a young age from hearing good English, to English slang, to broken English. I would like to conclude by saying that America is a huge melting pot of diverse people who all grew up in different situations, all follow different ideals, and will end up being nothing like each other when we are done.

Hello everyone, I am excited to be a part of this class. I always loved to learn about new places and their cultures and languages. I was born and grew up in different places, so I was able to experience different cultures. As part of my dad's job, I traveled to different places and was able to experience different cultures. Travelling from one place to another the way of living and their culture differs from other. Being apart from my family and living in a new place has always made me wonder how people and their lifestyles differ even within the same country. One of the factors other than culture that shapes us is our family. Regarding small things, we always seek the opinion of my family and our elders. Our parents shape us into productive individuals. Our traditions and religious beliefs also play a major role in making our decision. When it comes to culture, we have diverse cultures and traditions within our culture. Each place has its own art forms, languages, and cuisines. As I have been exposed to different cultures, I am a multi-cultural person. Moreover, it is our differences rather than our similarities that make us unique. Strength lies in differences, not in similarities. I always loved to know more about the U.S., which is one of my dream destinations. I would love to know more about its people and cultures. I am looking forward to experiencing its beauty.

Although I am Indian by nationality or citizenship, by residency, my first seventeen years were in Oman, an Arab country in the Middle East of Asia. When asked which place on Earth is home, it would be Oman; this might be due to living there without shifts of dwelling and schools so much. My visits to my home country India, to Kerala, an Indian state, were only during the school summer holidays. These home visits to see our relatives, close and distant, are described as 'an escape from the hot weather in Oman' by my family of four. As kids, my sibling and I thought Kerala was a holiday destination, not our home place. Little did we know then, we got to leave Muscat, the capital of Oman, as we'll be 'residents' and not 'citizens', depending on several conditions such as visa, occupation, and the like.
Reading anything I can get my hands on and the languages I can decipher is the easiest and most economical way to travel through various cultures of different world countries from where I live. Even if Indian societies are termed 'collectivistic', due to which we tend to stick to our customs and not so much of the outer world, we are made to expose ourselves to world happenings to enrich ourselves. In that process, many of us learn details about several countries, academically or as general knowledge, and ways of entertainment from foreigners. Speaking of culture, I have realised I have not indulged in a particular culture wholly. Nevertheless, I am who I am today, with pieces of different ways of life from across the globe. Maybe this is because I want to be open to new experiences that can aid my learning journey.

Hey everyone! I am so happy to be a part of this class and is excited to communicate with all of you. Being a keralite, I lived all of my life here with my family. In here we usually give so much importance to family values, community cultures etc. Even when it comes to a very personal decision like about our career we include our families in it. We usually take opinions from our elder ones even though the final decision is ours to make. Our country is so diverse and is rich in culture and traditions. That is why the phrase 'unity in diversity' is relevant here. This exposure to different cultures in my hometown itself has moulded me to become who I am today. So, as I became older I understood that it is important to give respect to each and every culture. But the foremost thing is that we have to accept and love the people how they are. Community living was so much prevalent here in the older generations but now we give preference to individualism as well. We live our lives the way we want doing things that make us happy. This generation has made us understood that it is we who should take the control of our lives rather than living according to the norms of the patriarchal society.

Hello, I am very excited to be doing a project of this sort. This class will be very exciting to learn new things and meeting new people from different locations. I was born and raised in the United States never really had the luxury of traveling around as a kid. Growing up my mother was a workaholic and never really had time to spend with us, she worked 12 hours 7 days a week. I admired her work ethic but she never balanced out work life and family time. That caused me to go into depression, so I started to read books about how can I accomplish my goals and still have time for myself, family and friends. I became a huge fan of Steve Harvey because he was giving me the advice that I needed. Once I had gotten older and had a family of my own I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake my mother did far as the work life balance. My biggest value now that I have a family of my own is work life balance because I never want my kids to feel alone.

I'm excited to approve my writing with this class because I usually have what I want to say thought out but I don't always have what I want to say come out properly. I enjoy reading and currently, I'm reading Finding Me by Viola Davis which is a good book so far if anyone wants to read it. I also enjoy traveling and learning about different cultures and new things. I enjoy being with my friends and family. Being African American my culture can sometimes be closed-minded to different lifestyles or beliefs. So I try to keep an open mind to different beliefs and cultures and learn about them. So by doing this, if I meet someone different from me and we become comfortable with each other, I try to ask about their beliefs and their points of view on life. I respect my family's outlook on life but have different views than most of my family.

Growing up in the US has showed me so many cultures differences especially since I’ve went to many different public schools where I’ve met many people who have different cultural backgrounds than myself. I personally am from a German and Italian background but I’ve only ever lived in the US. My grandpa and grandma, moved to the US when he was 16 and she was 15 from Germany during World War 2. I am very grateful for all of the stories they have told me throughout my life about how things are so much different here than they were in Germany at that time. I am also thankful for all the delicious food that my grandparents used to make when I was younger. My favorite would especially be when my grandma would make Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte which is basically a chocolate fudge sponge cake with jam filling and cream. I also am partially bilingual in English, German, Italian so I’m appreciative of all of the languages I’ve been gratefully exposed to. I’m excited to meet all of you and learn more about other cultures and customs than what I’m used to!

In our day to day life family plays an important role in taking decision in our career and life. We seek the opinion of our elders before taking a decision. We have our own traditions and practices that influence and mould us to the person who we are today. Even though there are many languages and cultures in our country, people are united by its diversity. Language is not a barrier between people in our country. We care about each other and live in harmony.I am so grateful that I was able to experience the diversity of different culture. My family was always there to correct me and guide. I am mostly who I am because of my parents and other family member. In India we give so much importance to family members in making any decisions even if it's a personal thing. We believe in individualism but we involve our families into each and every aspect of our life. Family and my community where I live helped me became who I am today. My neighbours and other relatives have explained what I can do to do better at things and which all factors can make me into a good person. People who don't even knows you will help you when you're at need which helped me a couple more times in my life. It is so grateful to have people who like to help us around us all the time.

In my place people share and enjoy from cloths to food. Everything. If we get one bunch of fruit we share it with our family and our neighbors. India is know for it's diversity and we mean it and make it work. We involve everyone and welcome everyone. These kind of mentality and all of the above mentioned shaped me who I am today. I'm so satisfied as the one I am today.
Thank you. So excited to have a good time with all of you guys ☺️

People in Kerala are very protective of their traditional customs, culture, religions etc. I'm an introvert person who don't get along with people very easily. My all time comfort zone is my family. I always try to get out of social situations and believe that being quiet is fine. I have a small circle of friends and I am really happy with them. I know that socialising is also really important in our life. Socialising helps us to improve our personality. Whenever I try to socialize, a fear builds up in me. But still I am trying to improve my self.

I had lost my father figure, my family lost their business, we lost a primary bread winner, and we lost the one man holding the family apart. Shortly after his departure our family turned secular and rarely communicates with each other, and we are weaker for it. But even though we are in a new era of the unknown for our family, we must all stay strong and hold on tightly. The storms of life don't settle down for anybody.

When thinking about the idea of being transported to a completely new place, my first thought is to how my mother grew up. As my grandparents were both in the military, my mother would tell us stories of how devastating it was to grow up moving every four years, especially the huge culture shock of moving to Japan when she was in high school. She would always remind us how privileged my siblings and I were to not have to pick up life and leave everything you knew, which always made me grateful for the familiarity I had as a child. Needless to say, if I was ever transported to a completely new place, I believe it would probably be extremely overwhelming. Though overwhelming, every new culture brings opportunity for new perspectives on life. I would hope this new community would open my eyes to new ways of life, bringing me a new sense of familiarity.

I once experienced life in a new place. When I finished high school, I moved with my family to a different location. Before I moved there, when I heard we were moving to a new place, I was super excited until I got there. During the first two days, I felt this thrill, but later, I began to feel alienated and distant. I found it difficult to familiarise myself with the new place and the new people. I felt so sad that I missed my native land and my friends. How people acted and interacted with each other was different. I always used to compare my old place with the new one, until I began to get adjusted. Now, when I think about these days, it makes me smile because I always dream of returning to my homeland. Now, I know it won't be the same as we expect, and there will be some rare opportunities that can't be replaced in our lives. Now I want to take every opportunity available to me to discover different places and cultures.

Of course the more known (popular) individuals gets more attention from others.

2.

In my culture we approach the unknown with kindness/respect. I have always had this approach due to my mother. She would always remind us to be kind and to have an open mind towards both people and ideas. I had a childhood of moving around a lot, so I lived in the unknown. I changed schools often as well. I would always be so afraid but she would reassure me and remind me to be kind. I stayed optimistic due to her pep talks and I handled situations with grace. This shaped my personal perspective, I respect all beliefs/opinions that are different from my own. It is very easy to judge and to choose ignorance over being kind and wanting to be knowledgeable. In the reading, people did not understand why this man was different and so they treated the man poorly, as if he was an object.

The unknown, I feel for the most part (depending) on your location, people do tend to help others. We have many homeless people in the communities between myself and where my children live, we collect items from neighbors and friends to provide, bottled water, and snacks that won't spoil. In the winter, we take caps, gloves, and blankets. Some refuse the help, or items offered, but most are happy. We shouldn't judge the reasons for them being where they are.
As in the story, the way the man was dressed, like a ragpicker, and his looks were old and dirty, yet he seemed familiar. They were judging because of the unknown. It could be that he was an angel, and they at one time knew him.
When I first started helping the homeless in delivering these items, I'll admit it had me wondering as some of the areas are not the best to be in, but now it is more familiar and a blessing, as I have met some really interesting people in the process, and they also are more familiar, with us and they also look forward to the chats. So, this is my unknown and also now familiar.

1. I think in our culture the unknown is treated without expectation. A couple years back my grandma suffered a stroke. Not only did she have one but multiple. My family and I never expected this. This situation rocked our world. My grandma was living in Florida at the time but ended up moving here so that we could take care of her and see her for as long as we could. We are still taking care of her and extremely grateful she is here with us. This is an example in my life and my view of the "unknown".

2. If I was transported to a new place in the world where the culture is completely different, I would feel nervous and guarded. I would feel this way because I wouldn't know any different than my own culture. Change can be scary to some and difficult to adjust to and learn. That would be a challenge to me. I would like my new community to help me adapt by being patient with me and helping me learn. Helping me figure out new ideas and challenges.

Hello Everyone!
I am Keerthy Lakshmi Raj. I am from "Kerala" which is known as the "God's own country". First of all sorry for the late introductory post. I am so happy to be a part of this class and excited to communicate with you all.Let me introduce myself. I am an extrovert who likes to spend time with family and friends. I like singing, dancing, listening to music, etc. My family is settled in Kottayam district of Kerala. Kottayam is referred to as "The city of letters".The city is an important trading center of spices and commercial crops, especially rubber. My family consists of my father, mother and an elder brother.

India is known for it's culture and diversity. India has a population of about 1.4 billion people. In India we give more importance to family and cultural values. India is a diverse nation where many religious people live together peacefully having their own different cultures.Indian culture includes the language, festivals, religion, dressing, food, architecture, art, music etc. Indian culture taught us about family unity, Respect for elders, developing ourself through socialism, etc. In this modern era, people are living in nuclear families, yet joint family tradition still exists nowadays in different parts of India.More than a religion, "Hinduism" is a culture exist today in India. There are many other religion and beliefs exist in India. In India, we have the right to express our thoughts, culture, etc.

Let me talk about my state - KERALA!
Kerala was formed on 1st November 1956.It's in the southern part of India.Malayalam is the official language of the state and we the people of Kerala are known as "Malayalees" or "Mallus".Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala."Kathakali" and "Mohiniyattam " are the artforms of Kerala.Kerala is one of the prominent tourist destinations of India, with coconut-lined sandy beaches, backwaters, hill stations, Ayurvedic tourism and tropical greenery as its major attractions."Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple" which is the richest temple in the world is in Kerala.

Now let me talk about the festivals in Kerala."Onam" is the Official festival of Kerala.Onam is the harvest festival in Kerala. It's a 10 day festival. The last day, "Thiruvonam" is particularly important in Kerala. Men and women wear traditional dress. We make "Pookkalam" using flowers. According to hindu mythology, the king "Mahabali" who once ruled Kerala will come to Kerala to know the wellness of the people."Thiruvathirakali"is the dance form performed by Women of Kerala during this festival.Onam Sadhya is the traditional vegetarian feast served on banana leaf. It is delicious. It is consists of a minimum of 26 dishes. The main dessert in Onam Sadhya is known as "Adaprathaman". In my opinion, Onam Sadhya is something that a person should try atleast once in his/her life time. We play many games like Vadam vali(Tug of War),Puli kali(Tiger dance), etc.

Vishu is the traditional malayali spring festival in Kerala. We celebrate Christmas, Easter,Ramzan, Muharam, etc. Despite of the religional diffrences, people in Kerala celebrate all the festivals in unity.

Our uniqueness is "Unity in diversity". When it comes to one's succes or failure, we share it with our closed ones.If we make some food items or get some fruits or vegetables, we share it with our family members and neighbours. We involve our family in making decisions like marriage, higher studies, etc. Nothing is complete without the support of our loved ones.2018 was a worst year for us. The flood brings many life in darkness. We overcome it by unity. The people all over India came with a helping hand. Through happiness and hardships the people in Kerala stayed together strongly.

The culture and values moulded me to who I am today.I hope that I gave an idea about my culture and country to you all.

Thank You

With such a major shift I would like the community to be accepting and to offer support. I would like to feel as if I belonged; I would like to have the community support me in learning their ways. Anything that is new is oftentimes uncomfortable. If the community was to offer support and treat me as their own, I would be able to adapt and get comfortable sooner.

The man in the story didn't have an option I feel that he ended where he was, he was just placed. I would hope to be able to mingle with the people, in the community so I could learn about the culture and the traditions of their culture. I would hope to be welcomed and not be an outcast and be able to teach them about my home also. The language I am sure may be an issue, but I feel if there is open-mindedness to try to communicate it would work. Being able to talk, see the community areas and ask questions would be most helpful I think for both sides.

As soon as I arrived at the new place I would immediately begin meeting native people and making connections. I would do this because meeting native people from the new place would make me feel more comfortable and begin making me feel welcome. The reason I would be anxious is the thought of adapting to a new area. I would have to get accustomed to new ways of going about day-to-day of life. I would have to learn a new language if the people don't speak English. Also, have to make new friends and get the place to start feeling like home for me. The majority of my family suffers from some sort of anxiety disorder, which can make the fear of the unknown extremely difficult to overcome. Due to this fear of the unknown, I have family who have never left their home town, unaware of the word around them. Though I do have some of these struggles as well, I believe stepping out of our familiarity can open our eyes to cultures and experiences we would not have been able to enjoy without the jump.

They used him as if he was an object and that was completely unfair. Oftentimes in my own community we do face the unfamiliar with a closed mind and are not as accepting as we could be. I always try to be accepting and allow anyone to feel welcome around me. The reason I say this is because when they saw the old man they were very judgemental because he looked different. Which can be similar to the world we live in now if your different or have different views from someone else people tend to be ready to cast judgment or crucify you for having different views from you.

Writing Prompt #1 by Krishna Shaji 1. How is the unknown or the familiar treated in your culture/community? Reflect on any incident from your personal experience.

The unknown can face both a positive and negative treatment equally. The culture tends to include the familiar, as that is what it is least feared of. When an unknown cultural element or a new person comes up, there's always the anxious atmosphere of the breaking of authenticity of the social group. In spite of this, the unfamiliar is always welcomed and is perceived to be a learning opportunity.
My cousins and some other friends outside my school used to ridicule me any chance they get when they see me, as they find it silly that I text in English and not in my native language, which is Malayalam. It's quite rare I find a non-native English speaker who is happy to converse in English. Nevertheless, this brings me out of my comfort niche, which can be a nice thing.

The community in which the story is set, does not support or catalyses the phenomenon of change. The people that are part of this society seems content with the conventionality, even if they find their growing problems turn unbearable. Anything that goes against their societal norms is perceived 'alien-like'.
The elderly that I am closely acquainted with seems to adapt to the openness of the latest generation, but little do they realise it is impossible to accept the new ways if they keep holding onto primitive stereotypes and norms, such as the suitable dressing of males and females, choose of spouse based on seemingly unbendable gender and sexuality standards, along with societal/religious status, to name a few. The youth of today of my place are becoming aware of patriarchal baggage that should be unlearned and what traditions to hold on that should never be let to forget down the lane by the passage of time as they enhance the goodness of the culture, society, and the country.

I would say the setting that the story took place was very judgemental and not welcoming because they looked at the old man differently because he didn't look like the people from the community. Instead of making the old man feel welcomed they made him feel like an art project because everybody was just staring at him like he was on display. This is similar to my community because if you look different people are bound to stare at you and make you feel as if you don't belong.

In my opinion the setting that the story took place in was very unwelcoming and judgemental. I believe this because they treated the old man differently because he was from a different culture than they were. I also say this because the old man was treated as an outsider all because he wasn't from where the other people in the story were from. I encountered an experience like this myself. I took a trip to the southern United States and got all sorts of weird looks when I referred to soda as "pop" and down there they refer to all Soda as "Coke" so in there eyes I was an outsider because i was not accustomed to their southern slang.

If I were to describe the setting and community I would have to say it was a hateful kind of noninclusive environment and that they judged him only on the basis that he was from somewhere that wasn't there. Believe it or not, that can happen still in places today where people might not say it but the way they look at you is a good sign to see if they mess with you or not. I couldn't really tell you if my community reacts like this and that because I've been in a type of community so long you get blind to it. People will always tell you that they don't act a certain way or the people they know would never do something like that but we are all blind to our on bias that it's hard to tell.

I would describe this a community of poverty, and the setting a seaside rural area of an older era. It is about not just unknown or a feel of fear but yet a powerful feeling the winged creature of a man is known to them. Maybe a person they knew in life that passed, and is now a angel. The religion is felt within the story.
Many different cultures and even people I know believe in the-Angle of Death, so this neighbor women stating he may have come for the child could have been their belief?
However they used him, belittled him,was cruel and very judgemental. But Pelayo, and his wife Elisenda felt that he was a foreign castaway from a shipwreck. Pelayo was cruel to place the fallen drenched angel/man in the chicken coop. And when the next morning their child woke with no fever. In a moment they felt magnanimous, had winged man been the healer? That feeling changed vastly when they found all the people outside looking at the supernatural creature, inside the locked chicken coop.
Then Father Gonzaga, thought him an imposter because he didn't speak or understand God's language of Latin. They made themselves rich from this very sad unknown, filled the pockets but what did they provide in return?
They never thought of what may happen next, nor held any repercussions of their actions. They allowed him to be branded, in order to gain a price. The angel only showed patience, in trying to find comfort in his borrowed nest.
It's sad to think our world would maybe act some of the same way. The media would have a spectacle in no time. The cruelty sometimes and judgement of people is what makes it hard on those that want a difference. We have to learn to not be so bias, and even though something that could be unbelievable, could really be.

I was so excited about my semester
I just couldn't wait. I was new to the on-line concept, had some concerns about how to manage and this being a accelerated course I had other concerns as well like am I smart enough! I had all my books, items were all organized, and well life just took a turn and I haven't been able to do 100 percent as planned. I missed assignments due to surgery, the loss of a ex-brother-in law at only 50 years of age and then the loss of my brother most recently in KY. I have given my best, kept an open mind and I have learned so much. About others, and myself. I will not be doing a summer semester but will attend the fall classes, again on-line. I may not have the grades I so desired, but I am not doing bad. I will be doing a little traveling this summer, just in surrounding counties in Ohio, weekend trips mostly but no hotel stays, outdoor only camp sites. I hope to learn from this experience also. There are 88 counties in Ohio, I had no idea so many. I may not get all of them this year but will have a scrape book and journal full of memories about the people along the way. I hope to continue learning in my next semester, and be 100 percent in the fall. It has been awesome to read postings, and travel to cultures through the words posted. Thank you
