Each object has a terminal velocity, which is the maximum speed and object reaches while falling. A parachute has a very low terminal velocity. The terminal velocity is determined by how much air resistance an object has. So creating a bigger surface area would create more air resistance, slowing down the objects terminal velocity. So bigger parachutes are better. To make a parachute accurate you should cut a hole towards the top of the parachute, to stimulate air flow and keep the parachute stable enough to fall straight downwards. A cone shape would keep the air flow central down the middle of the parachute and keep the parachute stable.

I found a website that did an experiment with a round parachute and a rectangular parachute. The results were that the round parachute fell the slowest and the rectangular parachute fell the fastest even though they had the same surface area. I also found that round parachutes are the most accurate and this all made sense because in YouTube videos I have seen of skydiving have shown that if they are not flying straight down, they have a rectangular parachute and when I would drop toy army men with the round parachutes, they fell straight down.

Terminal Velocity is the max speed that you can reach. The lower velocity the slower you will descend. You can think about it like jumping into a pool. If you belly flop you have less terminal velocity because the water (like air) does not have enough time to move out from under you. If you dive in then you have more terminal velocity. The water will be separated faster. This is why you move faster in the air when you are straight up and down than when you are flat.
