#7 Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz - Traditional Tales

Recommendation

The reason I’m recommending this book is because there isn’t just one story to tell. There are several stories that are each unique in their own way. The only thing they have in common is that they are all creepy. This book is perfect for anyone who has the slightest interest in ghosts, or old eerie legends. Even though this book would be perfect around Halloween time, it would also be a great bed time story. Another reason to recommend this book is because even though the stories are scary, the details are still suitable for young readers. You won’t read any vivid details, but it still gives just enough chill to send your spine tingling. If this book interests you, then you’ll be happy to read that there are several other books written by the same author, with the same amount of spook to each book.

Blog Response

This is my fifth chapter book.

I read this book once when I was in the 6th grade. Before reading it, I had to get my mom’s permission. I knew somewhat what I was getting myself into by all of my classmate’s comments beforehand, but I was still interested. As a sixth grader, when I read this book I was in disbelief. My mind could not come to terms that there are actual people out there who severely mistreat their own children. Reading the book today, after everything I have learned since 6th grade, mainly in college, it was not hard for me to believe what I was reading. Still, this book is heartbreaking and excruciating to read. My anger intensifies with each upcoming page. I am filled more with anger than with sadness. Angry because despite the cruel and horrific mistreatment, the narrator still just wants to be loved by his own mother. He longs for her warmth, her love, and affection. Instead she beats him and practices evil punishments. This book is challenging to read, but its an important topic to discuss in order to prevent child abuse.

#10 Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak - Banned Book

Letter to a friend

Dear friend,

After reading “Where the Wild things Are”, my thoughts wondered backwards to the times when I was young and used my anger to fuel my imagination. This is exactly what this story is about. Max is angered by his mother and storms off into his room and begins to imagine a magical place where he rules all of the creatures. Before reading the book, I researched to see why it was considered a banned book. The research stated that the book contained “witchcraft” and was not suitable for young readers. As I read the book I was on the look-out for anything that resembled witchery. I did notice in the pictures that there were some creatures that resembled evil symbols and beings. Still, this book is a great way to think about the times where your own imagination took you away on a mindful journey. If you decide to read this book I would encourage you to be open minded and take note of your thoughts once you are finished.

Review
This is my fourth chapter book.

Amina’s Voice is a heartwarming story about a girl who is in the middle of finding acceptance within herself. Throughout the story, she is faced with trying to be a good friend, daughter, and community member, all while balancing her own life. This story does an amazing job at showing the different cultures that are within a small town. Soojin, is Amina’s best friend. Soojin is apart of a Korean family and they are soon to be official United States citizens. Soojin expresses to Amina that she is most excited to change her name to something more “American”. Amina doesn’t understand why Soojin would want to have another name and questions herself and wonders if she should be expressing a more “American” lifestyle. Amina holds back her true feelings about the idea in hopes not to upset her best friend. Amina’s uncle Thaaya Jaan will be coming to stay with Amina and her family soon. When he arrives, he is displeased with Amina and her brother Mustafa for not speaking Urdu and does not approve of Amina expressing her musical talents because it is frowned upon and not allowed back in Pakistan. This upsets Amina, but she still tries to respect her elders wishes. Amina’s religious community is then faced with a tragedy. This tragedy however, brings the whole community together. This book shares a great story about forgiveness, self-acceptance, friendship and unity.

Recommendation
This is my third picture book.

After reading this book, I watched the movie to see how similar it was to the book. I pleasantly found that the movie was closely similar to the book. I want to recommend this book because it shows two different perspectives, both seeing aspects of life in different ways. Julie and Bryce meet at a young age. Julie is instantly attracted by those “dazzling eyes”, while Bryce is consistently trying to avoid Julie’s “clutches”. By the time they reach 8th grade, they are both trying to look beyond the surface of people. Julie begins to realize that Bryce might be less than the sum of his parts, while Bryce starts to “flip” over Julie. This book does a great job at showing what kind of character Julie is, she is warm hearted and determined. Bryce is still learning but grows as a character to be compassionate and thoughtful.

This is my second chapter book

Roller Girl is a brilliant graphic novel and Newberry Award Winner. Roller Girl is a story about a girl named Astrid, who has a strong will and determination to attend skate camp. At the beginning of the story, Astrid’s mom takes Astrid and her best friend Nicole to see a roller derby. Astrid is completely amazed with all of the skater’s performances and is eager to become a roller girl as well. Once skate camp begins, Astrid’s expectations of herself were not consistent to her performance on that first day. After the first day of camp, Astrid questioned whether this really was for her. The next day she is greeted warmly by the other camp members, and she ultimately decides to stick it out and try her best. Roller girl is a great story about determination, hard work, motivation, friendship, and success.

The first pig is quite lazy, he used hay to build his house so that he could be free to do as he wishes. The second little pig does not like to work either, he uses sticks to build his house so that he can go back to playing on his fiddle. The third little pig does not mind hard work. He builds his house out of bricks because he knows there is a big bad wolf somewhere in the woods. Sure enough, the wolf approaches the first pig and blows his house away! He does the same with the second little pig, down his house goes. The two little pigs run to the third little pigs house. The wolf huffed and puffed at the house made of bricks but could not knock it down. The wolf then tries to go through the chimney, but the little pigs outsmart him. The wolf is gone, and the three little pigs sing and dance happily.

#25 The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - Post Modern Picture Book. Blog Response

The very hungry caterpillar is an internationally acclaimed picture book. Each day of the week the caterpillar eats some sort of fruit. Monday, an apple. Tuesday, two pairs. Wednesday, three plums. Thursday, four strawberries. Friday, five oranges. Saturday, an ice cream, chocolate cake, pickle, swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon. At this point in the book, I’m thinking to myself that I wish I could eat this amount of food without feeling overwhelmingly full. The caterpillar is finally full and is no longer small, but a huge caterpillar. The caterpillar then makes itself a cocoon, and rests while slowly transforming into a colorful, beautiful butterfly.

#21 I am Helen Keller by Brad Meltzer - Biography. Recommendation

After reading the story about Helen Keller, I felt inspired. Helen Keller suffered an illness that left her deaf and blind at a very young age. Her parents struggled greatly with Helen, she was too young to understand or comprehend the dark and silent world around her. Thankfully, a very loving and patient teacher named Anne Sullivan came into Helen’s life. Because of Anne, Helen was taught new ways to communicate with the world. At first, it was difficult, it took several tries for Helen to understand but there was a breakthrough. After repeatedly spelling the word in her hand, Helen’s first word was water. Once Helen realized Anne’s strategies, the words and objects all started to make sense. Helen’s vocabulary grew quickly, and she also learned how to read with braille. I want to recommend this book because as a teacher, you must be patient with your students. You must instill hope and give them the chance to succeed. As a student, you can’t give up. Things take time, but it can be possible. Helen faced many challenges, but overcame them with her determination and strength.

I want to recommend The Other Side because it shows the innocence of children. Children are not born to be bad people. If they are bad, chances are they are raised that way. In this story, a black girl named Clover and a white girl named Anne are separated by a fence. Clover’s mother asks Clover to not go over that fence because it is not safe, but Clover is curious of Anne and wishes to play with her. Anne and Clover finally meet at the fence and introduce themselves to each other. Despite the world around them, they do not care about the color of eachothers skin. Clover and Anne sit on the fence together, then later play jump rope with Clover’s other friends. They stop to catch a break, all sitting on the fence together.

This is my seventh chapter book

The story Monster is about a six-teen year old named Steve Harmon. Steve is an aspiring film maker who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Steve is accused and arrested for supposedly being the look-out guy during a robbery and shooting. He is now faced with murder charges and is seen as a “monster”. Throughout the book, Steve documents his experience in prison in the form of a film script. Steve includes flashbacks relating the events in the weeks leading up to the arrest. Steve is trying to understand his own identity, despite what the public has said about him. This story is similar to many others in regards of the dehumanization of the accused. It also reveals the many flaws that our criminal justice system has.
