This story is based in a time when depression wasn't really well known, or at least not an official thing. After living in a room with ugly yellow wallpaper, the narrator starts to go insane and imagines a woman trapped in the wall. Towards the end of the story she believes that it was her trapped and walks over her fainted husband to keep touching the wallpaper.

This is assumed because she loved singing, but also because she carefully wrapped its body in silk and placed it in a nice box. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters hide the box from the authorities because they felt bad for Mrs. Wright.
