Movie Chosen: Ready Player One (2018)

"Ready Player One" is set in the period of a dystopian future. Global warming, overpopulation, and many other kinds of social and economic issues were rife. In order to escape the reality of their problems, a man called James Halliday incorporated a kick of magical realism by creating a virtual world called "Oasis." Anyone could enter the virtual world, they only needed special headsets (ones that did not cost too much) that would automatically transport them into the virtual world. There, they could be and do just about anything they pleased. However, everyone had become obsessed and preoccupied with the virtual world and had forgotten their priorities in the real world. In fact, the technological advancements made the majority spend their time in a world filled with fantasy instead of reality. Problems that threatened their future were neither being acknowledged nor solved. It came to the point where technology was finally in full control of human beings. As a result, the TOK question comes to mind "Is Technology a Threat to Society?" From the movie, it clearly was. A world where everyone is strapped into a virtual reality (with 0 physical and social interaction) is inherently sad and disconcerting. Is it better to live a satisfying life, one filled with lies than a life filled with the inconvenient truth? In some sense, yes, but only in moderation. It is, in fact, by human nature that people tend to avoid their problems than face them—something that was clearly shown in the movie as they constantly adhered to the pleasure of technology in light of the societal issues they were presented with. Hence, the AOK that can be closely associated with this issue is Social and Natural Sciences as it contains frameworks that will help address or further understand how and why humans interact or behave the way they do, with each other and the world they reside.

The Platform (2019)

The social issues identified in the movie are poverty and denied access to quality education. People enter the platform, a building with an estimation of 250 floors, because they signed a contract that their life will be better after finishing the given time of stay. Most people who enter this are undergraduates, or desperate people looking for a "shortcut" to a better state of life. The movie also displays how humans are consumed by greed and how it is natural for us to get more than what we need.

The Lorax(2012)

The social issue that is being tackled in the movie is the degradation of natural resources such as trees and the things that come and go along with it. In the movie, a clear picture was shown of what the world would be if we abused the natural resources that we had such as trees as well as the animals that live in them. It is a world lacking of the things that we have in the present such as normal food, fresh air, and the access to nature. I think this movie is somewhat of a metaphor to the real world that shows what would happen if we didn't change our way of living, if we do not stop abusing the natural resources that we have. With that in mind, we ask ourselves, "Will our future really turn out to be contorted if we continue to do the bad habits humans have?"

The Life of David Gale (2003)

This movie revolves around the life of a death row inmate, while he narrates his life to a journalist 3 days before his execution date. Until now, there is a debate on whether it is right to implement the death penalty or not, and in this movie, David Gale's life was focused on his plans to show opposition to death penalty, even if it involves him getting killed in the process. I think this falls under the Human sciences AOK, as it tells a lot about how different individuals act in a society, and the risks they're willing to take to fight for what they believe in.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Despite the movie being considered as a fairly romantic film, the social issues engraved cannot be overlooked. Vivian, the character played by Julia Roberts, is a prostitute hired by Edward, a rich entrepreneur to accompany him to events. He ends up falling in love with her despite their age gap and juxtaposed worlds. The social issue of prostitution is clearly evident in the exposition of the film as Vivian is seen with her fellow prostates chit chatting and while there are guys, or boys rather that are cat-calling and uttering statements that imply sexual deeds. This is embedded under a mountain of other social issues such as poverty, unemployment, lack of education, divorce, and so many other factors that makes other women to fore themselves into this profession. It clearly depicts the avulsion within society which creates misery for most but pleasure for some. This is otherwise known as the cosmic gap between the different classes in society, from the upper, middle, and lower class. This is seen through the character of Richard Gere
who willingly offers an obscene amount of money to make her stay and be with him overtime. Toxic masculinity is being portrayed as the girl is "helpless" or "struggling to make ends meet" while the guy is able to provide anything for her just like what a stereotypical rich man would be like. The movie highlights the riches of the man while the woman is left to live up to the standards of his world as she is told what to wear, how to dress and though they fall in love in the end, this social issue cannot be ignored. Therefore, there is also a feminist mood that can be taken away from the loss of women's rights to the toxic masculinity present in the film.

The movie could be related tp the AOKs of the arts, human sciences, and history. The move itself is a work of art and as the audience, watching it knows what's happening from watching it makes the social issue from the movie adequate for the AOK 'The Arts'. In addition, the movie can be related to human sciences as there definitely is a play in the emotions, characteristic, identity, and perspective of each character as the movie progressed and their relationship developed. Lastly, this social issue can be related to history as first, it has been over 3 decades since the movie has premiered. Secondly, because the social issue of prostitution and toxic masculinity goes way beyond the modern era, dating back to the Medieval Period. The movie solidifies how issues before are still present at modern times.

Django Unchained (2012)

The movie is set in South America in the mid-late 1800s and is centered around a former-slave Django, who embarks on a mission with the bounty hunter who freed him in order to free his wife who is also working slave in another plantation. The movie obviously tackles slavery and the harsh inequalities and social injustices that were common for such a long time in America. Since the U.S. has thankfully abolished slavery over a century ago, this issue it primarily concerned with the AOK of history. Although Tarantino's narrative is most definitely fiction, the exaggerated portrayal of the distinct interactions between people of different social standings (e.g. between slave and slave-owner, slave and slave, slave-owner and slave-owner) show what was most likely reality for Americans during that time; a reality that was especially unfavorable and hostile towards the black community.

Blood Diamond (2006)

Edward Zwick's Blood Diamond may not be considered as a spectacular film by critics, it still tells its viewers an important story of greed, love, and survival amidst the political/economical/humanitarian war against the South African [illegal] diamond trade. Two men from different backgrounds team up together to retrieve a hidden priceless diamond, with the utmost hopes that it will set them free from their own atrocities in life. What strucked me in this film is the very fact that the South African people themselves fight and kill each other just to get richer with diamonds. Gangs kidnap men of any age, enslave the adults into digging up diamonds and brainwash their children through a false sense of liberation. The conflict within its countrymen is already intense that the interference of international diamond investors raise the stakes and desperation of these South African people. War is the film's obvious social problem, and along it is poverty. The main and underlying themes in this film involves the concept of Ethics, wherein we are constantly challenged to identify the rights and wrongs in every dilemma we face.

Hidden Figures (2016)

This movie is based on the biography by Margot Lee Shetterly on the lives of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan. These three African-American were the "hidden figures" that were essential to the success of early spaceflight, but were not given recognition at the time. The movie addresses racism and sexism at a time where there was still segregation. The three incredible women overcame every challenge they faced with hard work and determination. Examples of the discrimination they faced as black women were the segregation of toilets, workspace, coffee pots, and education opportunities. They also faced misogyny as they were at a male-dominated workplace. However, they rose to the occasion as "human computers" and continued to accomplish what no one else thought they could.

Hidden figures could be related to the AOK's of history and ethics (Though mostly history). It is related to the AOK of history as it is based off of real life events that happened over 50 years ago in 1961. While it is not entirely accurate, it still stays true to the events that happened in the lives of the three women and the hardships they had because of their race, gender, and other personal issues. It can also be related to ethics as it, and the book it was based on, brought to light the major roles they played in a major part of history. Because of the extent of discrimination back then, their contributions were overshadowed by their white male colleagues. However when the book and movie were made, they were recognized, the movie in particular brought the story to a larger audience.

Okja(2017)

It is a story about the friendship of a young girl and her elephant manatee best friend. When a multinational corporate group tries to steal OKJA, the elephant manatee, in an attempt to make some kind of super food. Mija, the little girl, overcomes conflicts in order to save her best friend. This story was inspired by the reality for the billions of animals that are killed for food. The movie is a portrayal that depicts the social issue of animal abuse. It shows the greediness of human beings and the intrinsic behavior of corporate companies to earn profit. I believe the the AOK that is exhibited in this movie is natural and human science. I am in this opinion because it portrays how much corporate companies and society know about the aspects of how we understand nature. Nature is very limited. When we eat meat, chicken, pork, or any sort of living creature that is sold dead. Sometimes we forget that these animals suffered a great deal for a single meal. It also helps highlight that majority of society tend to ignore the abuse and focus on the pleasure of eating fine food. For the human science part, it goes to show how the values of our ethics and morals. The fact that we kill animals constantly and feed of the economical franchise of killing animals shows how we prioritize ourselves over nature.

BlacKkKlansman (2018)

BlacKkKlansman is about a cop named Ron Stallworth, he is the first african-american in the department he is in. To make a name for himself, he conducts an operation to expose the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). He works with his fellow officer Flip who is a white american, this is because he will be the one to go at the face to face meetings with the klan (posing as Ron Stallworth). The social issue here is that it addresses racial oppression and that the AOK related to the movie would be history because it did happen in real-life. It was also able to show the modern-day oppressive America through a historic interpretation of what Ron Stallworth did. A major example in the movie are white cops who arrest black people for no reason.

In the movie you can see black people working for them and that falls under the social issue ongoing right now which is #BlackLivesMatter and that black people are the only ones who are working and being killed if the work they done is not satisfying to the peoples eyes. the AOK related to the movie would be history because it has happened before and resurfaced again into the modern-day times which is today.
