Jarrett Lerner used tattoos as a metaphor because they are permanent. I believe that you can get tattoos "lasered" off, for lack of a better term, but it is very painful. And that applies to Will because to remove these words I believe in the climax of the story Will or Nick will endure an experience that is emotionally painful to get the tattoo off.
The connection between Will and the seemingly lonely bucket is that many people ignore the bucket and don't think much of it. Will can relate to this because I believe that all of the bullying from the other students is all in his head. I believe that he can relate to the bucket because many people don't give much attention to Will. In conclusion, Nick's words are tattooed in his brain because they are permanent and the connection between will and the bucket is that the bucket symbolizes the way Will is feeling.

In 4th grade Will was emotionally scarred by a few words spat at him by a boy named Nick Fisher. Will was oblivious to this before but on that day he was told something that changed his perspective on himself and how others viewed him. You might wonder what these words were that must have scarred him for several years right? It was "Your Fat", these words did something to Will making him feel horrible about himself making him want to change himself and do more. His friends tried to help Will but he just kept feeling horrible more and more drifting away from his support. He even changed his clothes just to hide in plain sight. In 7th grade he still feels the same way but even more self conscious being surrounded by people that are skinnier than him. He doesn't even buy lunch because he thinks he will be judged as being the only big kid in the school. He sits alone by himself in the corner at lunch next to a dirty bucket, mop, and a bin reading lost not yet found. I think this could represent Will not being able to find himself and being lost in him mind about his size and looks. :D thats it!

4th grade for Will had a bully which was Nick Fisher. Will was called "fat" by Nick Fisher in 4th grade. This tattooed the words in his head. I got a feeling that Jarrett Learner used the term "tattooed in his head" because with a tattoo it can't come off and stays on like it did with Will's brain. Will was sad and depressed by that and also felt like he didn't fit in with his society in 7th grade. He ripped up clothes at home and was really depressed with Nick Fisher back in 4th grade. The reason I think this affected him, is because no one had openly expressed what they thought about his body before Nick. That's hard to take as a 4th grader.
