Michelle shows this by talking about her personal experiences when growing up. Michelle talks about how she grew up in the Southside of Chicago, and how her family had little money. She didn't let her social status affect her when growing up. Michelle was a straight-A student. Michelle also grew up as a younger sibling to her brother. Her older brother, Craig, was a star basketball player. Everyone loved Craig and referred to Michelle as Craig's younger sister. Michelle had to overcome being shadowed by her brother throughout school. Once Michelle graduated high school, she took a risk and challenged herself by applying to Princeton. Michelle was accepted. She then had to prove herself at Princeton. Everyone there doubted and disregarded her because she was an African-American woman from the Southside of Chicago. She overcame this challenge and ended up being a star student at Princeton. This is a quote from Michelle Obama talking about her grandfather, and how he grew up during the time of Jim Crow segregation. This quote shows that "Becoming" is non-fiction because it talks about Michelle's grandpa's personal experience with segregation. This quote also shows how Michelle's grandpa combated segregation by moving further north to the diverse city of Chicago. Michelle in this excerpt is talking about her friend Santita and how her mom and house look. This shows the creativity of "Becoming", in that there are lots of details. One detail you can pick out is how Michelle talks about how the furniture is Victorian looking and how there is antique glassware around the house. Michelle also talks about what Santita's mom looks like by describing her as wearing vivid and flowing clothing.
