This book follows the story of Gilly Hopkins who has been handed off from foster family to foster family. Gilly has quite the reputation as somewhat of a bad seed, while she's extremely clever, she is not afraid to speak her mind and not quick to take orders. In her latest home, Gilly strikes up a plan to get in touch with her mother so they can finally be reunited and she can get away from the "miserable" family she is with. After growing closer to the family and finally feeling content, Gilly's grandmother shows up and gains custody. By the end of the story, Gilly does get to meet her mother, yet is disappointed by the realities associated with her.

Students will reflect on and write about how bias impacts people of different cultures and see if they can find any biases that they have themselves or prejudices that they have experienced against them. We will then hold a discussion about how these biases are formed and how we can stop them. They will choose a character from one of these texts and complete a cultural x-ray to gain a deeper understanding of their culture and experiences.

2. Students will interview family members to gain deeper insight and more information about their own cultures. They will also ask the family member about any experiences they may have had with prejudice or bias. They may record the interview if they like.

3. Students will share information about their culture and their family's experiences to a peer or to the whole class if they are comfortable doing so. Because some students may not feel comfortable sharing intimate details of their family history we will also hold a cultural night where they share a food from their culture.
