One may note the end rhyme example: true/ grew; and the alliteration: we grieved, we grew/ we hurt, we hoped/ we tired, we tried. When Gorman recites these lines, she punches out the alliterative sounds in each phrase. Amanda tries to emphasis that despite all the negative occurrences, America takes these drawbacks as a positive implication; a way to grow.

The tone of the poem is an optimistic standpoint for where America is heading with the initiation of a new president. At the beginning of the poem, Amanda begins by stating Americas struggles mentioning slavery, "descended from slaves." Then Amanda continues by trying to imply that America will hold a better future by striving to be a better union despite all its drawbacks it might have had in the past. "But that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect." Evidently, The tone is optimistic and positive, as Amanda tries to imply that the United States has a bright future ahead as they continue to strive for a better Union Everyday. Another example of Optimistic tone would be, " so let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left." With the inauguration of a new president, rather than Amanda trying to imply a questionable future for America, Amanda infers That America has a luminous future ahead with the hands of a new president.

(Oskar)

In the lines "our people diverse and beautiful, will emerge battered and beautiful." shows alliteration for contrast because here what is being contrasted is how the people of this country will emerge, "battered" and "beautiful". These words are almost opposites of each other. What this means in the text is how people in America are "battered" or have gone through very rough times but because of this they will also be stronger and more "beautiful" people because of it.

The repetition of "That even as we " in the poem shows how even though the nations as a whole went through many tragedies or as they "grieved", "hurt", or were "tired" the nation as a whole still continued on, it shows perseverance of the nation, that "we grew", "hoped", and "tried". This repetition of words is to show the perseverance and working through problems and solving them as a nation.
