Josh Estep, MD, tends to rural patients at the Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital in Newport, Oregon. The Newport facility Josh Estep, MD, works in treats a variety of conditions, such as orthopedic issues and diagnostic imaging. Because the hospital has only 25 beds, he can give personal attention to his patients.

Prior to his service at Samaritan, Dr. Joshua “Josh” Estep held a postdoctoral fellowship at Colorado State University in conjunction with Zabel Laboratory. He studied prion diseases, which are caused by an oversupply of brain proteins that can lead to memory loss and personality change. Dr. Joshua “Josh” Estep presented his findings in a conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition he investigated other degenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's, and mentored undergraduates seeking medical careers.

He spent 10 years with the Medical Missions Network, establishing free medical and dental clinics in more than a dozen developing nations. He also raised funds and supported the group’s American logistical operations. His professional interests include rural medicine and infectious diseases, and he is certified in basic life support and advanced cardio life support.

In his spare time, Dr. Estep enjoys hiking, hockey, camping, archery, and photography. He has traveled the Appalachian Trail and likes music and movies.

Scientists from the New York-based Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine recently conducted a study in the Safar Laboratory to learn more about the replication process of prions, which are misfolded proteins known to cause deadly neurodegenerative illnesses in mammals, including humans. Published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, this research study is the first to provide insights into how prions proliferate in the brain and cause damage to cells.
