The first is Athena. His second mentor is  Teiresias. Teiresias tells Odysseus his future when he goes to the land of the dead. This then allows Odysseus to prepare for when the tests occur. Circe was a mentor to Odysseus when he was having to go through the test with Scylla and Charybdis. When he talks to Tiresias he tells Odysseus of his future. "Anguish lies ahead; the god thunders who thunders on the land prepares it.... you'll find the grazing herds of helios... avoid those kine , hold fast to your intent and hard seafaring brings you all to ithaca... but if you raid the beeves, I see destruction for ship and crew" (Homer lines 633-644 and 641-648). While in the land of the dead Odysseus also ut that his mother, Anticlea, is dead. He also has a conversation with his shipmate Elpenor who died when he broke his neck. Elpenor says, " Do not abandon me unwept, unburied, to temp gods' wrath.... but fire my corpse and all the gear I had and build a airn for me above the breakers" (Homer lines 602- 605). This battle was when he sailed to the coastline of Cicone and destroyed and looted the town. They also took the women and enslaved them. Odysseus told them , "Back, and quickly out to sea again" (Homer lines 46-47). However his men were greedy and stole and killed more than they needed and should have. This broke the greek value of excessive greed, which gods hate. Because of this the gods punished them. The main god that did this was Zeus, he made a plan to make their trip home very hard, by letting some of the enslaved people escape. When they escaped they brought back their army. By them not following his directions they broke the greek value of excessive greed, "Odysseus and his men sail to Aeolia, where Aeolus, king of the winds sends odysseus on his way with a gift: a sack containing all the winds except the favorable west wind.... Odysseus men open the sack that drives them back to Aeolia"(Homer).

Odysseus shows the value of bravery by allowing himself to possibly die if the plan doesn't work for his men. During the episode of The Cyclops he shows how intelligent he is when he tells Polyphemus that his name is Nohbody so that when Polyphemus yells it out no one believes he is in trouble, "My name is Nohbody:mother, father and friends, everyone call me Nohbody"(Homer lines 315-316). He also shows his leadership during this episode, when he takes him and twelve of his best fighters to look at the island, rather than just sending his crew, "I took my twelve best fighters and went ahead" (Homer lines 136-137). Furthermore he exhibits the third characteristic of courage in this episode. When he stabs Polyphemus in the eye in order for his men to escape. "Straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye" (Homer lines 331-333). He also shows how courageous he is during the fight with the Suitors when he alone takes down over half of their army, and then with help defeats them all. "But the kingly man let fly an arrow at that instant, and the quivering feathered butt sprang to the nipple of the breast as the barb stuck in his liver"(Homer lines 1486-1488). During this episode Odysseus shows leadership when he, "Took twelve best fighters and went ahead' (Homer lines 136-137).  He then also shows the character trait of intelligence when he refused to stea, the sheep that were in the pins. " Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it.... Yet I refused" (Homer lines 167-168 and 171). During this episode Odysseus and his men, end up going into a cyclops cave. However, when they get into the cave the cyclops comes back and traps them inside. But using Athenas help he devises a plan to get Polyphemus drunk and when he is drunk to stab him in the eye blinding him.
