At the end of chapter four, Candy and Lennie leave Crook's room because George tells them too. As they leave Crooks calls out to Candy and says he has changed his mind about wanting to join them at their farm. He says, ''I didn' mean it. Jus' foolin'. I wouldn' want to go to no place like that'' (Steinbeck 83). After they leave Crooks alone he sits on his bed and slowly starts applying liniment to his back.

Explain the circular nature of the chapter and what it implies about Crooks and the other characters understanding of the American Dream.

The circular nature shown in chapter four is through how Crooks feels about the dream that Lennie is talking about. At first Crooks feels negatively about the dream that Lennie proposes to him. He states, "You guys is just kiddin' yourself. You'll talk about it a hell of a lot, but you won't get no land. You'll be a swamper here till they take out in a box." (Steinbeck 75). However, his outlook is influenced when Candy explains how they are so close to their goal of buying land. Crooks says, If you... guys would want a hand to work for nothing-just his keep, why I'd come an' lend a hand" (Steinbeck 76). After a while Curley's Wife comes Crooks becomes angry and decides that they all should leave his house. He then goes back to his negative attitude and he tells Candy to forget his request to work on their land. Crooks shows circular nature by starting out negative and ending negative.

Lennie, George and Candy all have a dream of having their own farm and they have a plan for how they are going to achieve it. Their dream gives hope to Crooks who does not necessarily have a dream of his own. After Crooks sees how hopeful the other men are he gets a little brighter and perceives the American Dream as more reasonable when before he thought it was foolish.

Crooks is lonely and negative because of the segregation that takes place in Of Mice and Men. Crooks grew up on a ranch with his family and he was not lonely. However, when he is on the ranch he stays by himself. This gives him a negative and lonely outlook on life.
