Physical characteristics of mental retardation include,  slow moving, slightly abnormal body parts ,such as the face or limbs, and the speech may show signs also. Behavioral symptoms include, unable to make eye contact, shy or timid, unable to remember, and does not interact well with some people. There are different ¨levels¨ to retardation. These levels include,  mild retardation, moderate retardation, severe retardation, and profound retardation. Many mental health agencies state that if you are around a mentally retarded person, patience is the key. Lennie displays many factors that could show that he is mentally retarded. In chapter 1 Lennie appears to be nervous and stutters because of it. Page 8 in chapter 1 says, ¨Lennie stopped chewing and swallowed. His face was concentrated. “I . . . . I
ain’t gonna . . . . say a word.” This shows that Lennie is timid and may have a problem communicating with others. Lennie likes little animals that are helpless because in a way they relate to him. The little mice and bunnies need a care taker and are so innocent along with Lennie. George and Lennie have a dream to own a patch of land and ¨live of the fatta the lan.¨ Lennie´ś main dream is to have all kinds of bunnies to take care of. Lennie and George are forced to leave Weed because Lennie´s obsession with soft objects caused him to touch a girls dress. George know Lennie´s Aunt Clara and this is why George took him under his wing. George did not meet Lennie until Clara died, but she wanted George to be the only person to take care of Lennie.  It is easy to tell that George can be frustrated with Lennie, but it can easily be seen that George loves Lennie. This can be told in chapter 1 when Lennie says that he is going to go live in a cave so he doesn't bother George anymore, but George does not let him leave.
