the man, the myth, the legend

Freddie’s first memory was him saluting at a crowd of his father’s admirers, a signature of Boo Hyunjae. When he turned his head to his grandmother, he remembered her fawning over this, “He looks not only just like you, Hyunjae. He’s just like you.”

It was those words that swelled up the little toddler with pride, but for a split second, he could have sworn that there was a disturbed look on his father’s face. Was it his gaze or the drop in his smile? Before anyone could notice, he immediately switched it up with a cheeky grin and ruffled little Freddie’s hair, “He’s certainly learning from the best”.

That Freddie did.

Boo Hyunjae was the eldest son of Boo Youngsik, a self-made businessman who commanded respect wherever he went. He learned this from his father, who was well respected in Korea during the Japanese colonial era, but not for his contributions to the empire. Rather, for the way the man represented and maintained himself: work hard, care for his family, and deliver back to his community. Youngsik inherited this same attitude, and he rebuilt the family’s fortunes soon after the Korean War. They had to restart by moving from their hometown to Wineport to escape the invading Northern forces. What started off with bartering with American soldiers as a child for candy and canned meats, he soon turned it into a distribution business that continued long after the War through his connections with soldiers, government officials, and growing markets around the country. Youngsik believed in focusing on necessities, for those would stay in any unstable market. He was a man of logic, believing in formulas and templates for success, measured not by short-term flash, but by what endured. Everything had a reason.

The apple fell far from the tree with Hyunjae. Unlike his stoic father, that ruled with a quiet fist, Hyunjae was a larger than life figure. He was bold, flashy, and seductive. Wanting to make his mark on the Boo legacy, he argued with his father that the company needed to grow beyond its comfort zone. While it was a constant contention between the two men, Youngsik gave the temperamental Hyunjae some cash and told him to do something. The old guard ruler expected his son, whose head lived in the clouds, to fail, to run back to the family headquarters with his tail between his legs.

Instead, Hyunjae created a media empire that started from a lifestyle magazine. One that showcased the family’s goods and other luxury products, selling a dream, a fantasy. Like his media company, Hyunjae sold a fantasy, his image: the wealthy, charismatic daredevil. He jetted around the world, trailed by beautiful women, living a life where money seemed infinite. By selling a fantasy, he didn’t just boost Boo Corporation’s profits; he gave his old man the middle finger he always wanted to. As Hyunjae became more and more of an icon, a legend, the harder he was to control, as he was the one who craved control. He was like Youngsik, calculative and controlling. Yet, he was flawed, narcissistic and manipulative. Both men had the same vision: to rule the Boo Corporation.

Like many across the nation, Freddie was sold by his father’s fantasy. In the boy’s eyes, Boo Hyunjae was an icon, a myth that he could never touch.

understanding

Freddie was the product of Hyunjae’s first marriage, one that only happened after the daredevil nearly died in a skiing stunt. He wanted to check it off a “bucket list”. However, that marriage ended after a few years, sick of domestic monotony, which resulted in two sons. The youngest of the bunch, Freddie was only four when his parents divorced. From that day on, he, his brother, and mother lived in a house that was modest compared to the Boo family mansion across the street. The boys would have family dinners once a week with their parents. Occasionally, they would spend time with their father, but typically in a group setting. Even then, their father was never truly alone, always surrounded by friends, women, and parasites, never fully focused on his sons. One on one time was rare for him, compared to his older brother, who was already being groomed to be his father’s successor. At first Freddie did not mind, as he cherished every moment he could grab with his father.

It was in those moments too; it allowed Freddie to observe his father and learn from him. Freddie noticed and copied every slight gesture every night, whether it was alone or in front of a mirror for a simple head tilt. He carefully measured and tested his cadence. Little habits and mannerisms went unnoticed. He learned how to walk and talk like his father. Even Boo Hyunjae’s signature greeting soon turned into Freddie’s, a two-finger salute. Whatever Hyunjae did, Freddie did, too. It was the essence of Freddie, but at its core was Hyunjae.

From the moment Freddie could talk, his father noticed the eerie similarities between the two that only grew. Freddie was not just a mirror, he was a threat. The boy was a version of Hyunjae that would outshine him. He was not a proud father, but a man afraid of someone that could easily take him down like he planned to do to his father. After all, Freddie had it in him naturally.

What he never understood was that Freddie was never a threat. He was merely a devoted son that tried to understand his father, not destroy him. Yet, this fear only grew the more Freddie tried to shape himself into Hyunjae. All of this for a son to understand his distant father. Freddie could never understand his father, who never showed his true self. There was always a show. To go beyond the show, Freddie had to reverse engineer and become his father to understand him.

If I can become what he is, maybe I’ll finally understand why he never loved me the way I needed.

Yet Hyunjae made it difficult to do so. Freddie had to build his own kingdom to do so, to become his father. He had to gain his notoriety, power, and identity through the world of racing. Even then, that was a well-crafted maneuver from father to son. When Hyunjae noticed his youngest son’s interest, but immense talent in karting, he pushed the boy into it completely. After all, it would keep Freddie away from the family business. At first, he praised Freddie for his newfound talent. Like a bee to a flower, Freddie loved not only the immense rush and adrenaline on the track, but the attention that his father finally gave him. It was with this growing interest for the sport; he put his all into it.

From the tender age of seven, Freddie would spend weekends around Japan, competing in karting races. Like his father and grandfather, losing was not an option. After a hard kick to the ground, Freddie would pick himself back up and study everything that went wrong. Each mistake had to be fixed. When he was back home in Wineport, he would spend his evenings in the garage to figure out how to improve and push his car to the limit. Soon his need to gain his father’s attention turned into a love for the sport, wanting to be the best. After all, he was a Boo.

It was with this drive, Freddie moved up the ranks in karting competitions around Asia. With innate talent and wins, it was only natural that he competed in Europe. Taking the leap at 13, he moved to Europe to continue competing in kart racing to make a name for himself in the scene. While he tried to fly back and forth between home and his race, he made the full time move at 16 when he started competing in Formula 4. What he never realized then was his father quietly working behind the scenes, pushing his management team to keep Freddie busy in Europe.

He returned home at eighteen to complete his military service. Many warned Freddie that his father wouldn’t be able to spend time with him during his military service, even though he was stationed nearby. Yet, he couldn’t help but to feel a certain disappointment, knowing his father rarely visited him at the base or met with him during his holidays. Hyunjae told his son that he had deadlines and meetings, but eventually the word made its way to Freddie. His father had a secret girlfriend, surprisingly a long-term one. It was this sort of news that he scoffed at, knowing that his father was not exactly one for commitment. Every girlfriend that he knew of lasted less than six months. If anything, the “alleged” flings were a much longer list than girlfriends. Curiosity ate at him, but Freddie never asked his father about the relationship. His old man knew what he was doing.

Freddie’s initial plans surprised most to stay in Wineport after his discharge, have a vacation. They expected that he would have raced back to Europe to continue his career. However, such plans did not last for long, a few weeks at tops. In the middle of the night, the young man left without a word to his family and back into his management’s arms.

Despite the time that passed, Freddie quickly adjusted back to the racing scene. He took on a gamble that few expected, to compete in Formula 2 rather than continue another season in Formula 3. The stakes were higher, and the competition was tougher. They were all competing for the same thing: a seat in F1. However, he needed to prove to himself that he was great, that he could compete. At first he started his season on a high note, headlines calling him “Soldier to Speed Racer”. Like Hyunjae, Freddie was charming and magnetic to the crowd, noted for his good looks. Even reporters would comment on the resemblance: the same grin, the same way of leaning back with crossed arms when things got tense.

The pressure quietly ate at him, as he spent nights practicing on simulators, studying each track, and devising strategies with his team. Talent was nothing without the grit, something he learned from watching his father. His efforts reflected in his precision, composure, and decisions on the track. When he was nervous, he’d straighten his cuffs like Hyunjae did before interviews, a small thing, but it made him feel invincible. Like he became something stronger than himself. While he ended in second place that series, he proved to many that he was a formidable racer.

Scuderia Toro Rosso took notice and gave him that chance at 22. Critics said it was a marketing gimmick to attract the Asian market. He was just a pretty face to push on posters and magazines. Personality could only get him so far. After all, he wasn’t a champion in his last series. Many counteracted such criticism, pointing out he had a maturity that few drivers his age had. Freddie and the team knew it was a gamble, a cutthroat one in the Red Bull world.

While he did not have the most stellar results like he did in his previous series, Freddie knew he had to make his dues in Toro Rosso and show that he was worth the bet. He pushed his car to the limit, leading to numbers and results that proved his worth and an actual contender for the higher-tier teams that were already waiting for his contract to end. However, he stayed loyal to his team and eventually earned his stripes, getting promoted to the senior Red Bull team at 24. It was then he finally proved his critics wrong with his consistent performance. Although he knew he would be just a second driver in the team, he still put in his all. He spent long days in the headquarters and garages, talking to mechanics and engineers to understand and play his car like an instrument. Once again, he studied strategies and styles of the great drivers before him. He would eventually win a race with a few podiums under his belt. Yet, amid champagne spraying on the stage and trophies being handed out, a quiet question would pass by:

Is dad going to call me?

Despite the fame, he could never receive his father’s recognition. However, it wasn’t a thought he could dwell on for long as he only spent one year in glory at Red Bull. It was at twenty-five his career ended. He crashed during the Japanese GP, nearly losing his life, on a track he was familiar with of all places. It was a case of the yips that never fully went away.

Stuck in a slump, he berated himself for a crash he could have avoided. However, Boos could never wallow in self pity. It was Boo Youngsik who forced his grandson to join the family fold. Not a move out of affection, but for power. He needed an ally in a company that was constantly fighting to have control over. He knew Freddie’s entry was Hyunjae’s worst nightmare. The Boo patriarch ordered the former driver to shadow him, learn the company by becoming his right-hand man. It was from there, Freddie learned the ins and outs of the Boo Corporation, the good, the bad, and the ugly. In that time, quietly observing his grandson, Youngsik realized his grandson was more than a racer. While the boy was a near copy of his son, Freddie had the same cleverness, grit, and ambition that he and Hyunjae had.

Out of fear once again, Hyunjae pushed Freddie back. To neutralize Freddie’s potential influence, he promoted Freddie’s brother to COO, a move backed by Hyunjae’s allies. Although it was a promotion made in vain, as he did not have the name or influence that would open doors like Freddie’s did. While his fame waned over the years, it left Freddie in a comfortable position. He had the notoriety that allowed him to open doors to powerful government officials and businessmen, but not infamous enough to attract too much attention to his moves. It was this balance of influence that Youngsik too appreciated, which had him promote Freddie to Executive Director of Strategy.

It was a legitimate title and position, where Freddie assisted in pushing the company to a desirable position. Yet those in the company’s most inner circle knew the title was more than just strategizing in the office. Freddie was the company’s fixer. He was the hunting dog that would do whatever was ordered of him, cleaning up any mess that was made, negotiating with high stakeholders, and overseeing the company’s delicate position in the world of business. Through his work and growing connections, it soon allowed him to have dirt on anyone and everything. Many would comment that while he didn’t run the company, he was the one who could make something disappear, appear, or change behind closed doors.

Being side by side with his father, the similarities between both men strengthened. As he always had done, Hyunjae distanced himself from the son that studied and worshipped every bit of him. At twenty-seven, Freddie slowly understood that his father would never choose him.

Not as a son. Not as a successor. Not as anything.

All because Hyunjae had remarried and had a new son. While others celebrated at the child’s birth, Freddie locked himself up once again for hours. A part of him believed if performed well enough, raced fast enough, and mirrored his father precisely enough, he would eventually earn the thing he wanted most.

Not the company. Not the power. Just recognition.

Yet it never happened.

Freddie could only realize that every part of him was made in the image of a man that was a fiction, a myth. Boo Hyunjae was a showman, always performing, but never revealing.

Now every move and decision has Freddie quietly questioning himself, “If I peel it all away: the voice, the smirk, the moves. What’s left? Who am I?”

Despite his realization, he still yearns for understanding that will never come while living as a shadow of someone else.

relationship: a toxic/obsessive proxy mirroring relationship. there’s unfinished grief, misplaced affection, and inherited delusion. they’re is a dysfunctional cycle pretending to be desire and lust, but it’s just unfinished business between the two that will destroy them.

note: must be female and over 35. please read freddie’s profile to understand his father, boo hyunjae, and the dynamic between him, hyunjae, and the mistress.

tw: age gap, manipulation, emotional abuse, power imbalance, obsession

muse a was only twenty when she started dating boo hyunjae, who was an icon to her. despite him being in his late forties and having children closer to her age, hyunjae was handsome, charming, and magnetic. he touched something deep in her that no one else could understand or reach. she fell for him, losing every bit of herself in him. just the thought of being away from him ached her. he was her sun, moon, earth, and stars. he influenced everything her said and did.

he never publicly acknowledged her, claiming that it was for his children’s sake. she accepted it. he always had a reason and she learned to never deny him. she was never a secret, but a shadow and companion when it suited him, but tossed to the side when it was convenient. still she dreamt of a future with hyunjae, one with marriage and children. yet, as the years passed, he did little to fulfill his promises. instead, a monster soon appeared, revealing his own dark nature as he dragged and twisted her into something sinister. at first he would make her feel special one moment, but soon pull away the next. she remained in the shadows until a magazine not influenced by hyunjae reported on the relationship.

it was then, hyunjae paraded her around like the beautiful trophy girlfriend. in private though, he would become emotionally absent and critical of her. yet it was in this private setting, she saw the closest thing to the true hyunjae. she saw his fears and vulnerabilities, especially with his youngest son, freddie.

at twenty-nine, she left when she discovered another affair. she realized he would never follow through with his promises of marriage and children. she was never enough for him. however, it only crushed her when a year later he married the other woman, even having a son with her. she gave hyunjae her best years, the best of her, her all. all hyunjae left her was an ache and questioning of why it was never her.

then freddie reappeared.

he was like hyunjae, a myth and his spitting image. he was younger, emotionally raw, and desperate. a boy that wanted to understand the same man that rejected them both. soon the two plunged deep into a relationship and intimacy built on grief, rejection, and understanding.

she wanted to her revenge, reclaim her youth, and continue her story that never gave her closure through freddie. if she couldn’t be hyunjae’s future, she would take his mirror and his biggest fear. there were times she swore freddie was hyunjae, but then she had to remember they were different people. for freddie, she gave him the answers he wanted and understanding. as always, he had to follow his father’s way.

she didn't know who she was without them. she told herself she’s in control, using freddie the way hyunjae used her. however, when she looked in the mirror, all she saw is someone wanting to be chosen once more. not just by a man who’s no longer there, but by a boy who didn't know who he was.

yet as the relationship progressed between them, she soon realized how eerily the two men mirrored each other. she was in the same position once again with father and son with her past repeating. freddie was becoming the father he resented, slowly turning into a monster too that used her. unlike his father, who she gave her life to, freddie gave her meaning. he was obsessed with her, wanted to conquer her, but also wanted to be loved by her. they were locked in a power struggle neither could win, desperate not to lose to each other or hyunjae.
