Prior to Soren’s death the chapter is very light hearted, with all of them joking around. This makes Soren’s death even more sudden and unexpected. The way Parrett names the chapters that is from Bo’s perspective also helps in this as the titles are just ship logs which means you don’t know what will happen or what the  chapter is about unlike the chapters from Isla’s perspective which you can get some information  from reading the title of each chapter.

Parrett emphasises Bo’s sense of loss in this end section of the chapter as we see how he thinks of what would have happened if he had gone instead of Soren and how Soren would still be alive. This shows that Bo partially blames Soren’s death on himself as he would have lived if Bo had gone down instead.
