Remember that expecting students to watch a complete 1 hour recorded lecture is something they are unlikely to do. Yes, in Panopto they can decide to watch it for themselves in sections, but they are not used to this form of engagement and wont understand when, and even that it is ok to engage with the material in sections. And after all, however engaging you are, you are not Netflix! (You wouldn't watch an hours presentation with slides, don't expect them to). If you can record any input in no more than 15 minute sections, or perhaps 30 mins with a place for students to pause actually highlighted, you will more likely get better engagement.
AMcG

Doesn't have to be anything much, a link to a news story, a You Tube video, or just a comment in a section in your 'Discussions' 'You might like to think about......'
DONT keep sending them emails. Keep off email to groups if you can. Students will set their own timetables and commit times when it suits them - welcome to asynchronus engagement! So much better to add to the site in some way, that way they are more likely to engage with whatever you wan to share in a way that relates to relevant their content, and not in isolation from it.
AMcG

We all know that in some ways, the best way to learn is to teach. Also, engaging with a face is better than text. Set a question and ask students to record their answer on a SHORT video, (they can do this on their phones). Tell them not to worry abut the presentation value, but just a quick content. This way they can all share in each others engagement. Then ask the students to 'vote' or to add comments to each others content, in a supportive way. You will be surprised how constructive they will be with each other!
Yes - it is nerve wracking when you try something like this for the first time - but trust your students, they are more experienced at this kind of thing than you are.
As you will see, there is an option to 'like', or add comments, at the bottom of a Padlet entry.
AMcG

There are different ways you can do this. The aim is to get them to be engaging with the material and not actually setting something that requires feedback.
This is a good type of activity to set in groups. Get them to use recording media, and Panopto will work, to read sections of something relevant (not a research paper that is too 'dry', and potentially too difficult). Get the group to make a recording of a section from the Course text, each adding the next few sentences to the reading. It may seem basic, but they can then share and work together.
OR Set a Case study exercise where the task for one group is record a reading of the case study, another group reads one question and answers it/discusses it - they can 'record this' using similar webinar tools themselves - such as Zoom, which they can use for free in small groups.
Be brave! They will love to be given 'things to do'
AMcG

You can embed in the additional resources section at the bottom of your Canvas site, ( if you need help drop me a query or contact TEL). And adding some short videos this week will be good for keeping contact and momentum for students. Don’t be concerned if it repeats material you will/have cover(ed) yourself - variety is the key to this type of engagement. REMEMBER to add the time/length of the video in the description so students know how long it will take. Short videos can encourage students to engage.
AMcG

I’d emphasis is chunking , I.e breaking things down into 10-15 min sessions, where possible. I noted this was also in the graphic re on line exams which Susan sent round, which noted the idea of breaking the exam down into different elements. Takes a bit of time but is generally seen as good practice

Mark F

AMcg
We still have to be mindful of timetabling if delivering live sessions online so we don’t clash sessions with other modules.
Always record so that they can review later.
An option could be to partner with a colleague who teaches the same students, more possible for compulsory NOT option modules. Then you can ‘share’ lecture slots and/or seminar slots and deliver two shorter sessions rather than two long ones.

Phil J
Or record and upload lectures, ‘share’ workshops (take the exercises out, or adapt them and a 2 hour workshop should easily cut down to an hour ...)

Isabel Fisher
Or you think about asynchronous learning - I thought I do most of my teaching asynchronously in short bite sizes which also allows for different time zones as I guess that many students now decide to go home

Mark
All of the above makes good sense. It is easy to upload lecture recordings from last year if this still matches current content (there is a guide) If so an easy win which allows us to focus energy on the type of activities outlined above.

AMcG

If recording in Panopto, remember it doesn’t have to be a whole consecutive presentation from a student's point of view; you can direct them to ‘pause this recording now and go and...... then come back for......’

In this way you can direct them to a specific reading or case that you then go on to review, or to do an exercise.

Think about asking prompt questions. When you teach in seminars you generally know the different (right and wrong) ways students will answer. Ask the question, pause, ( or tell them to pause and write it down) then ask them ‘how did you find that?’ - or something similar.

You can then go on to go through the various ways they may have answered, why you think they have done so, and why/what the most appropriate answer is.

This kind of ‘interaction’ will help a student to engage more actively with what you are saying and to self test their responses.

AMcG
