They identified as Hasid because of his father's Hasid background. He then went to college at Yeshiva University and took English Literature. He then earned his Ph.

His inspiration for the novel was simply his own life as an Orthodox Jew. Living with one parent who had a Hasid upbringing, his father, and one parent who had an orthodox upbringing helped him to see the perspectives of both sides of the spectrum.

Overall, most readers enjoyed the novel. It was well liked because it accurately portrayed two very different ways of life all within one main religion. This not only was interesting for non Jews to learn about a different religious lifestyle but also provided a heartwarming friendship for readers to love.

The Holocaust was taking place during the novel. The characters find out that other Jews just like them were being taken to concentration camps where they were treated like a slave and killed. This was a huge shock to everyone in the novel. This revealed the time period of the story and helped to set the mood. Many Jews began to have fear for other people and their life.

The setting of the book included many Jewish people who lived a very strict lifestyle. They ate everything Kosher which means that they can not have any meat that was cooked with milk or consume it within the same time frame. Eggs must be individually checked for any traces of blood. Another thing is that they cannot eat any hybrid fruits and vegetables. That means that they could not eat a Limequat which is a mix of a Kumquat and Lime. Rueven ate a very Kosher life like many people do today.

Rueven was brought up by his father to be kind to everyone while the Hasidic Jews, such as Danny, grew up in a silent environment.

Danny and Reuven were both raised with different morals. Danny was brought up in silence. His father believed that it was a way of suffering where he can learn empathy for others. Reuven's father, on the other hand, is someone who he could talk to. Mr. Malter offered guidance to his son unlike how Reb Saunders treats his son. Many Jewish children are brought up not in silence like Danny but like Reuven where their parents are there to guide them and help them be a better person.

Oral tradition is an important aspect to the Jewish religion. In "The Chosen," Danny attends his father's yevisha every week and hears his father preach from the Talmud. He then must listen for a mistake his father makes and correct it so he can get the full understanding of then lesson. That allows his to tell this meaningful lesson to others much like other Jews practice.
