Vygotsky discovered that as babies, humans have four elementary mental functions. They are: attention, sensation, perception, and memory. As children, we require tutors, or a person with more knowledge than us at our age, to help teach us. Without a tutor, humans cannot move on to their higher mental functions which are based on independence.

MKO stands for More Knowledgeable Other, which is a person of higher knowledge that is there to help the learner of lesser knowledge. Compared to the elementary and higher mental functions, the MKO is the tutor.

The zone of proximal development is important because in the ZPD, the learner is kind of in the middle between being able to do something and NOT being able to do something. The guidance received in the ZPD is what pushes people to be able to complete the task they are working on. The ZPD requires the involvement of a MKO.

Leo Vygotsky believed that language was a very important skill. He also believed that language worked as an accelerator for children, as children who engaged in private speech would actually grow to be more socially competent than children who struggled with social and speaking abilities.
