Eden Robinson’s "traplines" communicates a divergent view on cultural appropriation through Will, the character. Will, a young indigenous boy, wrestles with his cultural identity suffer in the modernization era, where he is developing in a white oriented society. He has to make a choice between respecting his indigenous background and taking the risk to experience the Western standards and perspectives. Through these hardships, the author puts emphasis on obstacles posed by the Indigenous youngsters who have to live in two worlds especially, and that is how cultural assimilation continues to fuel sense of exclusion and displacement.

"The Appropriation of Cultures" by Percival Everett shows the life of a young American Studies graduate named Daniel Barkley is in the center of the attention. He sings “Dixie” at the club, and he finds himself thinking about his Southern origins. He purchases a truck with the confederate war flag for saying this is his symbol to realize himself as a person from the south. He ignites a trend among his colored friends. Ultimately, the flag of the confederates is going to be taken out of public spaces.

"Appropriation of Culture" by Percival Everett and "Traplines" by Eden Robinson deal with the following topic, which is inquiring into cultural appropriation and its impact on some communities. Both of them are the story which starts with the characters who have to go through for their parts of effects of the dominant culture that is using some of certain features of their heritage and as the result many people cannot recognize, appropriate and connect them. Both novels explore the effect of the ongoing and the applying of stereotypes and discrimination. In relation to the idea of a story, these can be considered as deconstructing critiques that question the co-living imbalances which underlie cultural appropriation and its impact not only on individual persons but also on communities as well.

As for the cultural appropriation, which is now a part of everyday life all over the world, various concerns are expressed not only about the division of communities, but also about the creation of further inequality. In situations of cultural appropriation we can observe the way music, fashion, art and literature have been infused into our mainstream life without properly acknowledging the cultural settings of the practices being appropriated. With that, the stories and experiences of people in the margins are erased, whereas it also cultivates stereotypes and misconceptions that perpetuate the marginalization of these communities.

Eden Robinson's "Traplines" is illustrative in many ways. In this story, Will grows aware of stereotypes and discrimination that comes from the Smiths. He ends up discovering the complexity of Indigenous-settler relations and power in Canada. In contrast to Will, the Indigenous character, who suffers from the racial prejudice and discrimination expressed by the Smith family, who are white settlers. Through the story, Will is subjected to several types of stereotyping and discrimination, which underscore the persistent nature of racism in the Smiths as they relate with him. Indigenous identity of Will may involve Will being misunderstood and treated unfairly by the Smith family only because of his race. These assumptions are demonstrated on Will through snobbery, disrespect, or even being outright hostile toward him. Also, Will might be faced with economic discrimination where his access to opportunities and resources will be denied but is available to the Smiths only due to their privilege as white settlers. A result of this situation can be the unequal access to labor market, schooling or housing, signaling a deeper societal inequality between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

In the story 'Appropriation of Culture' by Percival Everett, protagonist Daniel Barkley suffers from stereotypes and racism that he encounters during the process of dealing with the matter of cultural appropriation. In the story, Daniels move through a complicated/lush space where his African American identity encounter the social norms and perceptions. Discrimination as a theme is evident when one of the instances is when Daniel encounters with some white fraternity members in a bar insisting on playing the "Dixie," the song associated with the Confederate South. The pressure to conform to those expectations underlies the white people's stereotype that African Americans are entertainers issuing into the meeting of white desires or demands. Having that in mind, Daniel's inner conflict is visible when he looks for the solution of the matter.

"The whites had always pulled out to remind themselves and those other people just where they were."

The statement has planted in his mind that power relation is something to be used by a dominant culture to gain an extensive amount of influence and a minor amount of misinterpretation over a marginalized culture. Artists who engage in "appropriating" Native American culture not only pervert the culture but also destroy the reality of communities.

"He drove home from the bar on Green Street and back to his house where he made tea and read about Pickett's charge at Gettysburg while he sat in the big leather chair which had been his father's."

In this sentence, Daniel breaks down the struggle he has gone through to define his African-American identification in a society which not only is very racially biased but is straight out prejudiced too. However, there’s a degree of pressure and expectations from the society, but he finds it in his own way that brings him peace by his own endeavors and interests. This indicates that he can live his live as he likes with his own set of values and beliefs, regardless of what other people think and hardly influenced by society.

In conclusion the “Appropriation of Culture” by Percival Everett and “Traplines” by Eden Robinson, they reveal how cultural appropriation is harmful, the discrimination and stereotyping are as well in a highly dramatic and meaningful way. This is realized through stories with a specific narration of the exact issues the characters faced due to inequality and appropriation of small communities by the large ones.

Through the story of "Traplines" the writer is able to show the difficulties that many Indigenous people including Will, are going through during the search for their identity as they are weighed down by the burden of indignity and prejudice. However, Wills story still helps in remembering that how far-reaching the enduring stigmas and bias from the settler community can be. In Everett's book is titled "Appropriation of Culture" and deals with this theme through the eyes Daniel Barkley a principal character to whom the author transmits feelings of belonging and Southern roots which are under comical undervalue.

These stories are key for the awareness of people that accepting those kinds of customs and systems which are not equal are acts of oppression and cultural appropriation. However, these stories also serve as a wake-up call because they make us confront the harsh realities of cultural appropriation, abuse, and discrimination and attempt to drive the society to create a world whereby each voice and each culture is appreciated and respected regardless of the cultural identities.
