This picture describes what I thought of Grendel's appearance the first time I read the items in this section. I pictured a rather large monster or beast. I did not think of Grendel as a human because he was banished by God as it says in the Beowulf passage, "The almighty drove those demons out, and their exile was bitter, shut away from men; they split into a thousand forms of evil-spirits and fiends, goblins, monsters..." Since Grendel was banished I believed he was not human. I also pictured Grendel as a rather tall, large, and strong monster. Also, in the Beowulf passage it states, "He slipped through the door and there in the silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them..." This shows Grendel's strength as he was able to take on a whole hall of humans without a problem and handled them with no problem.

Josh Allen/4th Grendel Song

The song I felt best fit all our our reading about Grendel was "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson. In the song, Michael Jackson targets the meaning to be towards a girl named Annie who was violently attacked in her apartment. The lyrics, "You've been hit by, you've been struck by, a smooth criminal" reminds me of the passages about Grendel. As expressed in the readings, Grendel viciously attacks on the towns meadhall very often. The people of the town don't exactly know when Grendel is going to attack, so it seems as though he is referred to as a "smooth criminal" in my mind. Grendel attacks the village without notice just as a person has attacked Annie in her apartment unexpectedly. The song fits the mysterious aspect of the stories about Grendel and that is why I chose this song.

I chose to copy Justin Maxwell's image from 6th period. Justin explained that he thought Grendel was a person submerged with darkness and I agree with him. This image explains a lot and if I didn't think Grendel was a monster this image would express how I felt pretty well. Grendel is an outlast and this image displays a person who has been a little misled in life. This shows a dark character that looks like he is able to take a life at any moment in time, which is how Grendel is displayed to be. With the skulls in the picture, it increases the level of evil given off by the man as he is surrounded by harmful things. This is a very good image and depicts how Grendel could be displayed if he was a human.

I chose this article because it gave a lot of background on the writing dealt with Beowulf. This article has very many interesting facts about the Beowulf piece. The article states that Beowulf is the first English literary masterpiece and one of the earliest European epics written in a native language rather than literary Latin. This article tells us that when many though the poem was written in the 8th century, Kevin Kiernan stirred controversy by stating it was published in the 11th century. In 1731, the manuscript was badly burned. The manuscript went through great damage and lost words on the outer margins due to the damage. Something I found interesting in this article was that with UV lights, we can see erasures or other text that were previously undetectable. The Beowulf manuscript is now in the British Library. A previous owner of the piece was Sir Robert Cotton. These were some quick facts that I found very interesting, but searching deeper in the website gives even more information about the text.

I believe the article I typed displays Hrothgar very well. I do not believe Hrothgar is a very fit king as he is just not capable of leading his people. Hrothgar does not defend his people as he should and more importantly does not make very good decisions. I believe in order to rid the problem of the monster, the people of the village need to rid Hrothgar as king and get a more fit leader.
