Salinas was nicknamed “The Salad Bowl” because it was a region of many farmed greens. At the start of the novel, it sets at the Salinas river near a town called Soledad (Spanish for ‘solitude’). He had an interest of writing about poor people who worked on land and dreamed of a better life and he also spent time around the farm labourers, although he came from a wealthy family.
