The author of OMAM, John Steinbeck, was born in Salinas, California in 1902. Salinas was nicknamed “The Salad Bowl” because it was a region of many farmed greens. At the start of the novel, it sets at the Salinas river near a town called Soledad (Spanish for ‘solitude’). He had an interest of writing about poor people who worked on land and dreamed of a better life and he also spent time around the farm labourers, although he came from a wealthy family. One of his famous novels were The Grapes of Wrath, which is a heartrending story of a family’s struggle to escape the dust bowl of the West to reach California.
