Rising Prediabetes, Undiagnosed Diabetes, and Risk Factors in Young Women

The core message of this research article is that the rate of prediabetes has been rising within premenopausal women for the past two decades. Most of the participants in this study were women 20-to-41-years-old and they found that almost one in four women of reproductive age had prediabetes. Although this research article focused only on women, I still think that this article is very useful for my research because it shows just how prevalent prediabetes are in younger women. This source supports my argument that prediabetes are on the rise in young adults because this research article found that prediabetes rates in young women have risen from 20% in the years 2005-2008 to 28% in the years 2015-2018. The information that I found in this article will most likely appear in my video/social media project. My plan is to discuss the rising rates of prediabetes in young women using the information that I found in this research article and connect that information to ways that young women can combat prediabetes, such as joining exercise groups/clubs like Girl Gains in UC Santa Barbara.

The core message of Girl Gains is to provide a comfortable and accessible space for women to come together and have a community to help support them on their exercise journey. Girl Gains also provides spaces to learn how to make healthier meals which, along with exercise, helps reverse prediabetes. This source helps support my goal of giving young adults resources to reverse prediabetes or prevent prediabetes because Girl Gains creates a space where young, college-aged women can learn healthier exercise and eating habits. This source, especially the UCSB chapter, will most likely appear in my video/social media project as a resource that young women can turn to in order to reverse or prevent prediabetes.

The core message of the UCSB Run Club is to provide a community for people at UCSB so they feel more comfortable exercising and running around UCSB, Goleta, and Santa Barbara. This source supports my goal of providing resources for young adults that will help them reverse or prevent prediabetes because the UCSB Run Club is free and accepts anyone in UCSB regardless of gender or fitness level. I will most likely talk about the UCSB Run Club in my video/social media project as a free source that people in UCSB can turn to in order to reverse or prevent prediabetes. The UCSB Run Club is a lot more specific to UCSB than Girl Gains which has chapters on multiple college campuses, so my plan is to talk about the UCSB Run Club as a source for UCSB students but expand on the idea of the UCSB Run Club by talking about how running on your own, in a group, or in a club as a whole is a great way to prevent or reverse prediabetes.

The core message of this source is that there is a rise of prediabetes rates among adolescents and young adults in the United States which is a big problem because it's leading to a rise of Type 2 diabetes which is causing a lot of serious heath issues. This source supports my argument because it uses research to show that the prediabetes rates are rising among young adults in the United States and it supports my goal of showing how dangerous prediabetes is by discussing how prediabetes is leading to Type 2 diabetes and the health complications that Type 2 diabetes cause. This source will most likely appear in my image/text project because I think that the statistic "1 in 4 young adults have prediabetes" is really eye-catching and shows just how prevalent prediabetes is in young adults. I also think that the statistic will cause young adults to stop and reflect on their actions and whether their actions are leading them down a path where they'll develop prediabetes.

The core message of this source is that when young adults eat more heavily processed foods, their chances of developing prediabetes go up and their blood sugar levels go up as well. This source supports my argument that prediabetes rates in young adults are going up and supports my goal of helping young adults form healthier habits in order to prevent or reverse prediabetes by showing how even increasing the amount of heavily processed foods you eat by a modest amount can still cause young adults to be at risk for developing prediabetes. I'm hoping that after learning that information, young adults will make changes to their eating habits that limit the amount of heavily processed foods that they consume. This information will most likely appear in my image/text project. I'm thinking of using the quote "intervene early before prediabetes" from this article and add some heavily processed food on one side of the image and some healthier alternatives on the other side of the image.

This is a news segment run by USA Today that discusses the prevalence of prediabetes in United States and some strategies to prevent and reverse prediabetes. The core message of this source is that a lot more Americans have prediabetes than people think (the CDC says that 98 million adult Americans have prediabetes and 80% of these people aren't aware that they have prediabetes) and that there are some strategies that people can engage in that will help them prevent or reverse prediabetes. Something that the two experts in the video discuss is that physical activity and exercise help immensely with preventing and reversing prediabetes. This helps supports my goal of giving young adults strategies to prevent or reverse prediabetes by explaining some causes of prediabetes and some strategies that people can enact that will help them prevent or reverse prediabetes. This source will most likely appear in my video/social media project. I'm planning on putting a clip where they discuss some strategies to help prevent or reverse prediabetes so that my audience is given some strategies to help themselves lead healthier lives.

The core message of this source is that positive changes in your nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle can help prevent and reverse prediabetes. This source helps support my goal of getting young adults motivated to prevent and reverse prediabetes because a huge portion of this podcast is dedicated to hyping people up and making them believe that they can reverse and prevent prediabetes if they make positive changes to their nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle. A sound clip from this source will most likely appear in my video/social media project after the USA Today Youtube clip because both of these pieces of media are focused on preventing and reversing prediabetes so it makes sense to put them next to each other to encourage my young adult audience and make them believe that they can reverse or prevent prediabetes.

The Effect of Acute Consumption of Energy Drinks on Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and Blood Glucose in the Group of Young Adults

In this research article, young adults were given energy drinks and then monitored after they drank those energy drinks to see what was happened to their blood pressure. At the end of the experiment, it was found that the consumption of energy drinks in young adults lead to an increase in diastolic blood pressure and blood glucose. An increase in blood pressure is linked to the development of prediabetes, so this research article supports my claim that energy drinks are part of why many young adults are developing prediabetes. The information found in this research article will appear in my text/image project and my social media project.

This supports my argument that sugary energy drinks and fast food cause prediabetes in young adults because sugary energy drinks are sweet drinks and most fast foods are salty processed foods. I'll use the information in this source in my text/image project and my social media project when showing common things that young adults do that cause prediabetes, such as consuming too much fast food and drinking too many energy drinks.

The core message of this source is that eating a healthier diet, such as eating more vegetables, will probably lower your risk of decreasing Type 2 diabetes. This source supports my argument that eating more vegetables helps reduce someone's likelihood of developing prediabetes because prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes are caused by the same underlying issues (ex. poor diet). The information from this source will appear in my image/text project.
