To me 'rural' is less inflammatory than 'remote' but I do think it needs to be clear that it's all relative

That we are quite far removed from a city.

If I'm thinking geographical community then rural is where I currently live. If I think of social identity communities then I think of people who 'are' rural and identify as a rural person. If I think of special interest communities then I guess its people who champion rural 'things and issues' e.g. forests conversation

Everyone has to be seen as individuals not all lumped in as 'rural' We have to look at individual needs.

Recognising the practicalities that might exist when engaging with a rural community (i.e. transport barriers). Also the fact that it may be harder to talk about mental health/sexuality/etc in a small community where you're known by everyone

The binary sticks out to me. It's more fluid, e.g. around the edge of a town

Lerwick is seen in similar context as the central belt of Shetland, rural is what describes the rest of Shetland

It means researching all things rural. It means involving people from rural communities in research as co-researchers.

Again practicalities - funding/costings to ensure that the chance to participate is equitable

It means 'rural proofing'. It means not assuming urban policy fits for rural communities.

It's much harder to have anonymous results in smaller populations

i think most shetland folk would use the word remote rather than rural when describing the whole island

If you think about globalisation then rural communities are interconnected with urban hubs. It is not either/or and nor is it us/them because there is co-dependency

Communities know what will work for them. Codesign is the way forward along with flexibility in language and style
