Pa is the father of Rebecca. He is an older guy that is stubborn, grumpy, and heartless in my case. He blamed the mother of his children on her dying giving birth. Saying in his exact words, "She didn't fight enough to try and live." (Pa 28)

"Why aint things ready on the table. What the devil you two been doing all this time?" (Pa 28)

Rebecca is the daughter of Pa. She has Laura, Amos, and Mercy as siblings. Her mother died at birth having Mercy. Rebecca is scared of Pa with his temper. It is his way or no way with him. She is scared to even speak let alone look at him.She eventually realizes that Indian John isn't who they make them be. She starts to carry meals up to him.

"As I sat by the hearth the next morning, the question of whether to free Indian John spun around and around in my head." (Rebecca 193)

" I would save the life of Amik, no matter what harm came to me. That's what I decided." (Rebecca 200)

I feel like a good theme of the book would be prejudice. As read multiple times, Whites are the best around and that is all that matters pretty much.

"Pa never told us he would capture an Indian and bring him back across the river." (Rebecca 5)

"All of the folks were preparing to lie for the trial."

Another good theme for this book is the fight for survival. As Indian John is held captive for murder. He tries to get out any way he can. Eventually he escapes at the end of the book.

"You are to tell them that their friend has not died as everyone believed, but he has gone away with his family and still lives. Gone away and still lives." (Doan 232)
