Cronus, the Titan King, swallowed all of his children whole in an attempt to maintain his position of power; however, Zeus was spared by his mother, who fed Cronus a rock instead of Zeus. After Zeus grew stronger, he forced Cronus to throw up his siblings and Zeus became the eldest sibling as the regurgitation was considered a second rebirth. He imprisoned all of the Titans, who were siblings of Cronus, in Tartarus forever. Zeus rose to power after overthrowing his father, becoming “...the king of the Olympian gods and the supreme deity in Greek religion… he controlled the weather, offered signs and omens and generally dispensed justice, guaranteeing order amongst both the gods and humanity from his seat high on Mt. Olympus” (Cartwright). Zeus was also officially married to Hera, the goddess of marriage and fertility, but frequently cheated on her, resulting in the birth of many Gods, including Athena, Apollo, Artemis, and Dionysus.

Zeus allows Athena, the goddess of wisdom, to aid Odysseus throughout his journey by appearing in dreams, directly offering him advice in her human form, and convincing other people involved to aid Odysseus in his voyage. Zeus simultaneously allows some Gods, such as Poseidon, the God of the Sea, to interfere and sabotage Odysseus by using his command over the seas to balance out the help Odysseus gained from Athena. Although Zeus did play a part in some of the fortunate and unfortunate events that occurred during Odysseus’s quest, he did not ever directly interact with Odysseus or “make himself directly known to the lost hero” (Greenberg). Zeus, overall, played a minor role in The Odyssey but his intervention and influence led to the bigger events that occurred throughout Odyssey’s long voyage.
