In 445 B.C. ten men were appointed to formulate the twelve Tables (laws).
The first "table" said that if you are summons to court you must go to court. If you don't show the other person will win the case. if both show, both can agree on a solution the case is over. If you cant come to a compromise the trial can last till sunset, no later. 
The fourth table said that if you child is deformed it should be killed quickly.
The sixth table explains the land rights that a man has, so if your neighbor has a tree leaning over in you yard you can take legal action to have it taken down
The eighth table is a set of laws for injury,and death, an example is if you kill some one while robbing them you are to be killed.
The last table is when the court has declared some thing that is now law.

The tables where not flexible, they did not change over time to suit the new times in Rome.
