  • The Dakota Access Pipeline is an underground pipeline that transports crude oil.
  • It extends 1,168 miles across North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois, crossing through communities, farms, tribal/reservation land, & wildlife.
  • The construction started in 2016 and since then there have been protesters against the pipeline.

    1. It will worsen climate change by pumping thousands gallons of crude oil to market daily
    2. Construction of the pipeline will/has already damaged sacred burial sites
    3. The pipeline may burst and ruin the water supply at the Standing Rock Sioux and millions of people downstream

  • The pipeline route runs under the Standing Rock Sioux Indian reservation.
  • The protesters say that  the construction and size of the pipeline would put the reservation’s only supply of drinking water at risk of oil spills and contamination, the sacred lands would be disturbed, &people's private land would be tampered with.
  • Thousands of protesters have set up camp on land belonging to the Army Corps of Engineers at the confluence of the Missouri river in North Dakota.
