I would recommend this book for 3^rd and 4^th graders. This book has a lot going on so at some parts it was hard to follow. I had to reread some parts just to understand who was talking. It was a really fun book to read! Magic played a huge roll in this book and to young kids I feel like they are mesmerized by magic. There were magical creatures such as a swamp monster and a tiny dragon. I feel like these two creatures are what make the book so entertaining and I think young students would enjoy them. 3^rd and 4^th graders could do different activities associated with this book, such a writing response and vocabulary.

Review: This short picture book is full of rhyming words, such as the Zlock behind the clock, with weird, strange creatures on each page. Each place he takes his audience he explains what the animals name is and where he is at. The book setting is placed in a young boy’s house where he takes the readers on a tour to show them all the different creatures are in his house. This short tale is very interesting because at the end the boy explains to the readers that he loves his home just the way it is; each creature is special to him in their own way. Little children would love this book because of all the funny looking creatures and silly rhyming words they don’t hear everyday.

 

I chose this quote because I feel like it explains the whole story in just a few words. Throughout the book, Neftali is told multiple times by his father how small and weak he is, he is the smallest of ships but Neftali does not let this stop him. He is determined to have great adventures in his life, he is going to write about these adventures. From the beginning Neftali loves to go on an adventure no matter how small it is. He is strong-minded in deciding to discover who he is and what the world has in stores for him, he will not put his beliefs or understandings on hold because of who is Father has told him he is.

 

“Dozens of others all wanted to be DJs just like Kool Herc”

 

I think this quote is very important in this book. When Clive, or otherwise known as “Kool Herc”, all he wanted to be was a DJ just like his hero, Dj King George. This quote shows that Clive reached his goal and is now a hero to everyone else. It shows that he was dedicated to DJing and did not give up. At the end he threw the best parties and everyone was there. DJ Kool Herc was the creater of hip hop, and many inspired to be just like him, just like he aspired to be just like DJ King George. 

 

I highly recommend this book for grades 5^th & 6^th.  This thrill seeker about the adventures of George Calder during his time on the Titanic, and how he survived the sinking of the titanic, keeps kids on their toes while they are learning historical facts.  I would not recommend this book to kids any younger than 10 years old mostly because this story discusses the real life events that took place, including the death of many passengers and crew members aboard.  This book is perfect for 10, 11, and 12 year olds because while it gives historical facts, it is a story that students will find interesting, exciting, and dark.

I would recommend this book for 2^nd graders to read independently, but you could read this book to students as early as Pre-K, for the fact that it is very informative. It has activities throughout the book that you can do with the students such as examining your tooth brush to make sure it is clean. There are pictures of a dentist and how they examine the children’s teeth. When I was reading this book there were some details that I didn’t even know about. My only concern are there are a few larger words that the students may not know and may need help reading, such as Fluoride.
