What was ancient Thai music like?

"When you (as a foreigner) listen to traditional Thai music, you will notice that the music is pleasant to the ear and is outstanding with its rhythmic tinkling sound, which is what you will remember most vividly afterwards." Says the website http://www.thaiwaysmagazine.com/thai_article/2605_traditional_thai_music/traditional_thai_music.html. The Thai musical scale was extremly different from our very own, as "almost all the notes are slightly different in pitch from those on the western scale ." In addition, the only real differences are that only the interval between a note and its octave, eight notes higher up the scale, is the same as in the west." Thai music was popular in the early 1800's, and is still very nice on the ear.

Transition between ancient Thai music and modern Thai music

Westren music made its way into Thailand in 1900, and ever since has been very popular. Before that, however, traditional Thai music was extremly popular. It was tradition to have royal bands that competed regularly to find out which one was the best, and which musician was the best of his instrument. "Nowadays, a traditional musical competition is annually arranged in August at Wat Phra Phiren in Bangkok." http://www.thaiwaysmagazine.com/thai_article/2605_traditional_thai_music/traditional_thai_music.html
