The significance of this event is that it signifies the troubles that the U.S. was going through with Germany before they entered the war. This is also significant since Germany had declared war on the waters in which was surrounding the British as well. This was breaking the agreement and protocols that were set in place which did not fit well with the European allies and Americans. This event had killed 1,195 people including 128 Americans, according to the Library of Congress. This caused the U.S. to take great defense for its people as Germany was taking a direct hit at the U.S. and their allies. This is able to show another side and reality that Americans witnessed before the start of war.

U.S. Influenced into War due to Foreign Investments 1897-1915

The significance of this event is that it signifies another real side of truth and reasoning for why the U.S decided to go to war. It was in regards to exposing the foreign investments that were being made. The U.S. understood the significance that if their allies lost and were unable to pay back money to them that they would eventually lose that money and never get it back. This would severely affect the economy, this is seen through Howard Zinn's claims in regards to how by 1914 private foreign investments to the United States had amounted to $3.5 billion. This significantly shows a part of intention that people with higher power knew about and how that played a role in shaping the war.

It even went to the point where people would protest and have committees against signing to the League of Nations.
