Eminem was the first hip hop artist to win an Oscar in the Best Song category. 

He was the first white rapper to gain both success and respect in the hip hop culture. 

 

2013 

Then came Kanye West with his "Yeezus" album in 2013. The album was critically acclaimed for the theme of racism and black identity. Around the same time came the feminism into play in hip hop/rap . Nicki Minaj is one of the few female rappers still relevant today. 

 

1979: Sugar Hill Records was responsible for releasing some of the most important records in the early years of hip-hop as "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message”.

1984: Def Jam Records became synonymous with the period that is known as the Golden Age of Hip Hop, and released its first official single in 1984. ”I Need a Beat" by rapper LL and became a huge thing.

1985: the group Public Enemy, influence could be felt on Run—DMC, especially on the song "Proud to Be Black". that was a call for education, black brotherhood and togetherness. which was needed, as there were violent conflicts between black gangs. 

1986: The white rap group, the Beastie Boys, released their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986. The album, which fused hip hop and rock, became a bestseller and paved the way for white artists in hip hop.

1986: Run—DMC’s collaboration with rock group Aerosmith on "Walk This Way" (1986) became hip hop's first Top 5 pop single and only few other groups could match them.

1987: Schoolly D and Ice-T were pioneers in this genre (gangsta rap)  and rap songs like Ice-T's "6 'N the Mornin'" (1987) and "Colors" (1988) had a crucial influence on one of the most seminal rap groups in Gangsta Rap: N.W.A whose music popularised the genre. The group and especially its key member, Dr. Dre, would continue to influence rap as it moved into the mainstream period. 

1988: In 1988 a show called Yo MTVRaps got created and was only dedicated to hip hop:. 

1988: The same year as Yo MTVRaps got created the music magazine The Source saw it’s beginning as the first hip hop publication.

The 1970´s: Hip hop culture emerged in the demolished Bronx district of New York City. 

 

City planner Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway Project meant that around 60,000 homes were torn down on account of being slums. -->Black and Latino people was relocated /communities broken up --> Hip hop = an alternative identity, a new community, for the people 

 

One of the manifestations of the new hip hop culture was the neighbourhood parties 

 

A DJ simply brought a sound system and played music. A practice began where the DJ would use two turntables to prolong and isolate instrumental passages in a song: the beats. 

 

DJ Kool Herc was the pioneer in this field and is often mentioned as one of the founding fathers of hip hop, along with Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa who named the culture. 

 

In the beginning, the DJ was also a rapper --> but the roles of MC (short for Master of Ceremonies) and DJ would later be separated. Some MCs recorded solo projects, like Spoonie Gee and Kurtis Blow, but rap groups dominated.

Eminem also starred in "8 mile", which is a movie about his life actually. And in 2003 he won a Oscar for his song Lose Yourself, which he became the first to receive 

 

Dr. Dre also released the album 2001 in 1999, which now would be considered one of the best rap albums to exist, and his instrumental work on it, became inspiration to a lot of new producers, including Timbaland, Mustard etc.

 

Rappers like Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Eminem and 50 Cent were big rappers at the time

Gangsta rap were still embraced and made by rappers like 50 Cent, Lil Wayne or The Game 

 

Get Rich or Die Tryin by 50 Cent, which is also considered a rap classic, and have many modern rappers being influenced by. 

 

Jay Z released two albums in the beginning of the 00', which is now considered as rap classics 

 

Kanye West released 808 and Heartbreaks in 2008 and that was a whole new sound of hiphop, which later became the mainstream sound of today.
