The students made free-flowing drawings with oil pastel while listening to jazz. The next day they learned about symbols and how they can be used to represent something else, and how Basquiat used the crown as a symbol in his paintings. They brainstormed things that are important to them including family, God, and love, then designed symbols for them. The final day they painted with only primary colors red, yellow, and blue and  drew on their symbols.

They brainstormed a theme centered on the question "how do you feel about yourself?". The students then searched through newspapers and magazines and found images that interested them as well as the theme of their work. They learned how to use contour cutting, a method in which one cuts along the outline of an image to create depth and make the composition visually interesting. They then pasted their pieces, collaging  onto paper.

They observed a variety of examples throughout history, from the Egyptian Queen Nefertiri to student-made busts. The students practiced through a draw-a-long how to draw a self-portrait of themselves, focusing on proportion, and the placements of their facial features. The next session the students then worked on making an armature, or a framework for their bust. This was made out of cardboard pieces, newspaper, and tape. Then they used clay to flesh out the body parts and finally their facial features.

During Women's History month 4th and 5th grade learned about Kara Walker, a female artist renowned for her work in silhouettes,  a drawing of an object that shows the object's outline, but none of its features. They learned about gesture drawings, where students volunteered to make a pose for the class to sketch. Next they explored how to make a variety of poses with cut-out pieces of the body figures and pasted their final pose. Finally they drew an outline around their cut-out figure, cut that piece out, and pasted onto final paper.
