Next, I want to rework my composition on the piece. Additionally, I break up all of the ideas in my pieces and work on different mediums as well. I do not want to stick just to charcoal as I want to be more descriptive with color, and better convey emotions in a sense. I am utilizing makeup in the first piece as it's something women have been both forced to wear and demonized for wearing. Sometimes, personally, when I wear makeup, it feels like a mask. I was experimenting with lipstick on a pig as it's a common feeling amongst women. I also want to do something relating to affirmation sticky notes because I tell it with insecurity in the self, this combined with makeup portrays the instability all women feel with their femininity at least once in their lives, I feel.

For my sustained investigation I want to illustrate the transition we go through mentally as teenagers adapting to adult situations and growing out of our childlike view.

Using watercolor and color pencils (i this piece at least) I want my pieces to look straight out of a child’s imagination where everything is vibrant but also temporary.

With these watercolors I want everything to have a soft appearance, even the dark contrasting colors instead of black would be purple to keep that vibrancy.

My sustained investigation question is Why is it Hard to be Vulnerable? I am interested in this idea becauseI I feel that many people experience these thoughts and struggle with vulnerability. I know for myself, I definitely have had trouble navigating through this. I want to visualize how this can feel since it can be hard for people to verbalize and express. In my planning process, the materials I experimented with were watercolor, colored pencils and acrylic paint. After testing these, I decided on acrylic paint because the colors and texture represents a more foggy and dramatic effect, which I feel better fits my topic.

In my sustained investigation I will be exploring what dissociation looks like, and how I can convey the feeling through my art. I aim to show people how intricate it is, and the separation people with dissication experience.

My first piece includes an aquarium scene, where the main focus is the figure separated from everything else due to the aquarium tank in the piece. This is done to depict the separation dissociation entials. I use different elements, such as negative space, composition, and color to show my message. I also use specific marine life, sea urchins and plecos, as symbolism. I will be using the following mediums: watercolor, liners, and possibly color pencil. This is done to further push what I want to say, ultimately making the piece feel loose and sketchy.

My sustained investigation is to take many figures or concepts in Philosophy and Religion and put my own spin/interpretation on it. I chose these ideas since i'm interested in philosophy and the ideas that revolve around them. I think putting some of them in the spotlight could make people aware of a different perspective on many topics as well as make a fun portfolio.

In this piece I take a character depicting the appearance of a God, so an old skinny man in a robe, and have him look disappointed as he walks upon his conflicted creations. For this piece I want to highlight a different vision of God. A God who created foolish people that will kill their own kind for no apparent reason.

The mediums I want to use are Ink and Acrylic Paint. I chose ink since I use it a lot and I believe it gives off a somber tone compared to color. I want to use Acrylic paint for the background as I plan on painting the background black with maybe white spots to show a simple sky.

I wanted to explore deeply as to how to make these certain colors connect to human emotion. I'm interested in this idea because colors are all around us and most people tend to feel a certain way about those colors. In my sketch I wanted to connect the color blue to the human emotion sadness. The color blue is usually connected to sadness but also calm. In showing that blue connects to sadness, I drew a girl thats sad. I experimented with oil pastel for the first time and markers that i've used before to find which medium works best. I like the oil pastel because it creates a sense of lost/gloomy feeling that I wanted to show. Recently I've also decided to add the girl holding happy flowers, colored yellow, to add another emotion to the scene blending in to her. I plan to improve on these ideas in my final.

For my sustained investigation I want to explore the Russian time periods and illustrate how fashion changes and reflects the tone each time period has, as well as conditions in which people have been living.

I want the vibrancy of my artworks to reflect each time period's mood. For the first artwork I want it to appear rather vibrant because that's how people in Russia used to dress back then and to just show all the different details of clothing.

I'm interested in this topic because when i was growing up we have been learning more about the history of Soviet Union and how life was back then, rather than how life was during monarchy periods in Russia.

I'm also fascinated with traditional russian clothes and what people used to wear at court in Saint Petersburg, so i'm interested in exploring that.

The mediums I'm considering are color pencils and markers(also charcoal and watercolors for later on artworks) because they are the best medium to draw fabric and its details with. Next, I plan to improve and practice drawing fabric and people to be able to fully illustrate my sustained investigation topic.

For my sustained investigation I want to capture what it's like to hold yourself back for the sake of fitting in.

I am planning to work with acrylic to get that rough around the edges look I want to go for while maintaining the bright colors of the explosion and the me coming out.

As I was working, I changed the composition to me simple coming out of my eye to a more interesting and dynamic piece by having the larger me hold myself back and try to push me back in.

For my sustained investigation I want to showcase my self in the 20th century because I think it's a very interesting time and try to also show how people use to live their daily life's in the 20th century. For my finally work I have an idea on what I would like to do for my first final project, which will be two people dancing with each other and this would be the time period of 1920-1930s. I am working with different materials like copics and colleague I really like the colleague I did as an experiment I think it came out pretty good of course I would add more colors to the colleague and try to practice balance out the colors. I might practice with water colors and add some color pencil detail not sure yet.

I also want to improve in my backgrounds for these pieces and maybe make some side practices with the backgrounds and finally revise t on final paper. Next week or this week I plan to get started on what media I should use, the positions on the characters, references, and how my background will look like ad make sure I can keep the focus on the character dancing.

I have always liked history so making art related to the 20' century seemed perfect to me.

I am working with markers and colored pencils because i want the colors be vibrant contrasting with that time.

In this piece I wanted to explore how consumerism and propaganda managed to mark part of the 20's century. Taking into account previous events such as the war, the great depression and everything that was happening at those moment. I wanted to highlight the idea of being able to buy what you want in a world that offers you what you want and more.

For my sustained investigation, I want to portray visually how my life and worldview have been shaped by having a Dad with Bipolar 1 disorder.

I chose a green and orange color scheme to represent the chaos and confusion I felt when first hearing that my dad had the disorder. The expression that I chose represent my mixed emotion and me trying to understand what that means for me and my family. The text bubbles represent what people have told me about my dad. Either from my family, strangers, friends or even myself. These all force my younger self to grow up faster and adapt to a new change, that is my dad's diagnosis.

For my sustained investigation, I wanted to highlight the general experiences of my past and how every thing I did (whether it be cooking and or visiting places) tied into my Cuban identity in some way and how it taught to accept who I was as A Cuban-American.

For my first piece, I wanted to experiment with prisma colored pencils to expand my technique and shading for this still-life piece, I might also include alcohol markers as well for certain shading. The goal is to bring a sort of realism/kinda child-like view to the shelf and it's objects as the alter has been there ever since I was young and I would always pay respects to it a a normal thing, without ever realizing how important it was to my Cuban identity.

In my sustained investigation I plan to express my complicated relationship with growing up and leaving the nostalgic things about my childhood behind in favor of growing older. This topic is something I plan to cover with a variety of different mediums such as oil pastel, charcoal, watercolor and colored pencil. For my first piece, I plan to make a duotone piece with oil pastel depicting current me and a younger more "idealized" reflection of myself looking back through the mirror, depicting a feeling of not "recognizing" the you looking back and wishing you could return to a simpler time where looks didn't matter.

For my sustained investigation, I want to explore and dive deeply into the many ways moments though they may seem small and nonimportant are valuable to my persona. How these experiences shape the way I feel or how I view the world that surrounds me. More specifically I want to touch on this topic through human connections, the way a small but meaningful interaction with someone can turn my life upside down and make me treasure my happiness and well-being.

In my first piece project, I want to portray an everyday moment of taking public transportation to reach my destination with people making it less boring and tiresome. My idea is to illustrate a subway station in peak hours in which I'm walking with school friends to go to school chatting and laughing while contrasting a more serious and gloomy atmosphere of the ambiance, to express that no matter how boring and unpleasant the world could be when I'm surrounded with those I love all of that can disappear and form a barrier that blocks all negative like a bubble. For the medium, I'm going to try something new to experiment with pastel chalks and to also have a blurry motion through the subway of the constant moment of the people walking around.

Grow: My shading could have been more detailed but overall the style and look is about what I imagined.

Glow: I like how my Inking turned out I think it definitely makes what it's used on stand out which was the intended purpose.

Symbolism: The man in a robe like clothing is a representation of God (Old posture/looks, tattered clothing, skinny) and he walks upon skulls and weapons disappointed, that his own creations have ended each other. The crows emphasize the concept that a conflict/death has happened in this area. The empty and vast area is to also enhance the idea that it's a wasteland of people who have killed each other.

Grow: I believe my shading and overall rendering of this piece could have been better executed, since at times I think it looks a bit too sketchy or rushed. Glow: I really loved my color choice for the "me" in the mirror. I think it creates that childlike, pastel look of like crayola crayons and it really contrasts to the dark, dreary exterior. Symbolism: This piece represents the complicated feeling of not recognizing your reflection. As children, we aren't really concerned about our physical appearance, It didn't take me that long to brush my hair and get ready to go to school. But as a 17 year old, I have to make sure I look perfect otherwise I'll feel bad the rest of the day. This piece is meant to sort of symbolize how growing up so fast can make the "you" you see in your reflection seem almost like a stranger. I used oil pastels to give off that childlike, crayon look, and contrasted it with the muddied pencil sketch of the current me to emphasize the difference between how I felt looking in the mirror as a little girl, and how I feel now.

Grow- I think I could have represented My topic better by having the pose more tense and concerned. I think it looks too calm and not as dramatic.

Glow- I think adding the words really helped represent my theme and it wouldn't be as strong without it. I also like how I made the color scheme dull and dark.

The words projected on the figure in my work represent the thoughts, worries and cation of being vulnerable. She is naked and covering herself to show the unwanted exposure that vulnerability invites. The darkness and dull colors helps represent the fear and intensity of vulnerability.

I like the colors I chose because they're complementary colors. The red on the phone brings the focus to it and the green also does as well.

I drew a zombie girl because technology makes us braindead. I also only drew her eyes because I wanted to focus on the pinkness of it. Usually when someone is tires their eyes get red or pink.

Grow: I definitely feel like this project could’ve been more detailed, I usually work on larger scale paper so working smaller was a bit of a challenge for me.

Glow: I love the way the coloring came out, it kind of went together the way I planned with pink being the central color, blue being the color of the ground, and purple being the shadows. I envisioned this color pattern in my mind so because red, yellow, and blue have a triadic relationship on the color wheel so I just picked different tints of those colors and applied them (pink, turquoise, and pastel); and that yellow would be the perfect color to highlight and contrast the purple shadow because they’re complementary to each other. So I’m very proud of how my use of color came out

Symbolism: I usually depict koi fish throughout my art because one I like fish, and also because they commonly depict preserverance. The red/orange and white koi fish specifically is a sign of big life changes and transformations which I thought was very telling of this piece and my SI question.

grow: I think this whole art piece can really be improved in general, from colors to structure. It looks rushed and messy. I used oil pastel for the first time and I think it'll be my last time using them. I definitely should've practiced more.

glow: maybe the background, it gives hard texture. If someone were to guess what emotion she's feeling, they'd probably guess that she's sad not only from her facial expression but also the blues so at least the color stands out. The blues symbolize sadness.

This is not my final work whatsoever, I cut out her head and then collaged on top of it with transformative collage pieces such as the evolution of a rose and a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. Grow: Having my actual project would be a great idea, I also changed my idea like three times, leading me to rush on my final work, leaving me really dissatisfied with what I was able to actually do. Glow: I like the shading on the headscarf and the juxtaposition of her headscarf with her face, the collage also sets it all together and actually makes sense with my theme.

Grow: I need to get better at enhancing the depth and perspective of my pieces. A couple of my lines were too shaky or uneven. I also just need to get better technique wise using the materials I am using.

Glow: The colors scheme and overall composition of my piece looks nice. I enjoyed creating my piece and like how it is smooth and textured at the same time.

Symbolism: The fish tank symbolizes society, thus showing how the main figure is disconnected from the world around them. I used Pleco fish and Sea Urchins to further show my point. Plecos have parasitic relationships with the algae they eat, leading to me using them near the main character as if they were sucking emotion out of them. Sea Urchins being sharp and ridge creatures, they were used as a barrier from other fish. This further creates space between the main character and the rest of the scene.

Grow: Although from a afar the texture shading turned out pretty alright. I think up close could have made it more defined and prominant.

Glow: I am very glad with how the perspective of the shelf and items turned out! Plus for a first time use of Prisma's I think I shaded and used my colors well with my overall piece.

Symbolism: This piece in general is one of the many works in my theme where I would highlight specific parts in my life that are tied to my Cuban identity. Which back then I didn't realize were so significant to Cuban culture but now I do as someone who accepted her identity. In this work the hands in the bottom are my younger selfs hand praying to the San Lazaro Alter, in which the statute of him is toward the right of the shelf. San Lazaro here is one of the main parts of the piece as he is a Saint only worshipped in Cuba. On the wall of the shelf you see the normal cross necklace but next to it is a blue & white beaded necklace which is something used in Afro-Carribean Santeria, a old practice for African Gods but in Cuba the 2 were mixed together. The candle to the left is typical for every catholic alter. Lastly, spread along the shelf there a random childlike items like a little bear, a bell, and show ring. These are to represent my child-self's interpretation of the alter as a whole. As a child I thought the alter was something so common in life, not realizing it's cultural significance and just put my toys on there for the fun of it.

Grow: I think a grow in my investigation is that I think I got better in character full body and line of action. I’m still working on color but I think I got a little better.

Glow: I think a glow I need is to work more on background and furniture. I believe, I could do better on how to show furniture and background.

Symbolism: The symbols relate to my investigation because it show one side is from a different time period and the other from todays times. Some objects are the dress from the left, the phone, makeup and I try making the hair different and short like in the 1960s. The right side you can see the girl is wearing shorts, the shirt, and mirror with lights. I think I could have done the shoes, background, face expression, floor, and the dynamics of the characters more.

Grow: In my opinion, the background of my artwork could have been better executed because it lacks value.I feel like more details in the artwork would represent the topic of my investigation better.

Glow: I would say I really improved my skill of drawing with watercolors and watercolor pencils. I think that I managed to show texture of the clothes pretty well and I like how shadows turned out as well.

Symbols: The symbols of my artwork are "Samovar"- it's a traditional russian tool to boil water and make tea, "Kokoshnik" which a traditional russian headdress worn by women since 10th century and "Sarafan" which is a traditional russian dress. All those symbols reflect my culture as well as show how life was during 9th-13th century in Russia and what people used to wear back then.

For my second piece I wanted to lean more into the “adolescent mind“ part of my question. A book I used to enjoy when I was younger (that I’m sure a lot of other people enjoyed too) “A Bad Case Of Stripes” , a book about a girl who’s self conscious feelings show outwardly appearing as stripes and patterns on her body. As someone who got acne early on growing up before a lot of my peers did, it sometimes felt like I too had stripes. I would even try a bunch of crazy remedies that did nothing in the end. I wanted to capture this feeling by using a familiar book/reference and concept everyone can relate to.

For this piece I’m using oil pastels instead of watercolor like I did on my last. Unlike the flowing watercolors I used in my last piece I’m hoping the oil pastels bring a certain textured and dynamic look to this specific project. The book itself has pretty surrealist looking coloring and I hope to give a nod to that original concept.

I chose to make a cloud skirt for the girl because of the joke that is usually said to tall people. "How's the weather up there" I also exaggerated her size in comparison to the other girls I will be drawing. Usually walking into a room I feel like a giant and sometimes that a good and thing and most of the time it's a bad thing for me. I also drew measuring tape to further push the topic of height. I also made the color scheme to be blue and orange because for all my projects I want the colors to be complementary. I haven't decided what the expressions on the other girl's faces will be. In my experiences girls are either really really mean or really really nice when it comes to my appearance. I think I'll have the girls have different expressions to have a more variety. I'll have the girls being outside to make the cloud being her skirt make more sense. My sustained investigation is the life of a teenage girls and my experience with my height is very much part of my experience of being a teenage girl overall.

For my second piece I wanted to highlight the idea of how too much of anything is bad for a person. In this case a someone with high ambitions, focusing on one singular goal. While great to have a goal to work towards, a person can blind themselves and lose sight of other great things around them. These sketches showcase a person holding a rose highly focused on it, but, avoiding and ignoring the colorful world around them.

I chose to use acrylic paint as it's perfect to create a colorful and bright background as well as a great representation of the flower the person focuses on. I used the ink for the person as it's a representation of how he's closed off to the open world. The goal was to create a contrast between color and colorless to distinguish the contradicting ideals.

In my sketches for this project I drew a girl with butterflies in pink color pencil, she's supposed to be shy/nervous. I had different ideas of where the butterflies are coming from, either from her face, around stomach or heart. The butterflies are going to be coming out of her to support the feeling of "butterflies in stomach" which is connected to shyness. I also want to show in her facial expression that she's nervous/shy by her eyebrows raised. For my second piece I wanted to show loneliness in a younger manner. It is a juxtaposition between the older girl and the young environment she is in. She has a set of four teacups but is the only one using which displays how she is lonely, the table being one for little girls adds to it. I experimented with pastels and colored pencils but decided to go with colored pencils as it would allow me to draw things much more detailed.

For my second piece, What I plan to convey with this is the feeling of pretending to be someone your not, and hiding it. To do this I’ll draw two versions of me, one in a monochromatic gray graphite palette, and one in bright colored pencil. For my second project, I want to represent the state of your heart when you are faced with vulnerability. I will have hands holding the heart, one protecting and one leaving it more exposed and open. I will divide these sides with stitches that I may use thread to represent. For the medium, I tried out colored pencils, markers and collaging. I have decided on the collage option as I feel it will have more emotion and fit my theme better. For the background, I want to keep it simple and dull so the focus can be on the life of the heart.

The closed off/protecting side, will be intact but also dull and lifeless. I want to do this to represent the possibilities that you may be missing out on when you aren’t open, but also how your heart stays safe. On the open side, the heart is brighter with a lot going on. There are some bandaids and damage to the heart though, representing how your heart can get hurt if you are too vulnerable

My research for my second project is about jewelry for the 19th century and the jewelry can be from any time period. I also went ahead and took out different jewelry that I had like for example my earrings with pearls is actually from my great-great grandma so it's a good example of what people use to wear back then same goes for some of the rings I have many people back in the 19th century would wear a lot of jewelry. Another fact of me researching my jewelry is that the beautifly necklace belongs to my mom in the early 1990s. The rose pins in prismacolors is from my great great grandmother so it was properly from the 1930s. I definitely want to use different colors and lt of gold as jewelry as that was the common color for people who owned jewelry. The most thing people ad were pearls or rings but other than that I chose theses colors to give it a kinda old vibe. I also wanted the colors to show very bright colors to make them pop out of the gold. For my sketches I did three different compositions one that was watercolor I wanted to see if it would give an old and soft timing vibe. I used prismacolors and ended up choosing this medium cause I really like how it gave so much detail and it was something I had never worked with so I wanted to try it out. For the watercolor I would have chose the medium but I want to use that for another project next time. I also practice with oil pastels and I liked it but it didn't let me give it to much small detail so I ended up not using that medium. Glow: I like how vivid and distinct the colors are compared to the clouds

Grow: Although I like the pencil aspect of the clouds I don't like how unfinished they look. I could have added more detail and the lack of detail looks out of place next to the rest of the piece.

Symbols: I made the taller girl's legs with more detail to force the viewer to pay more attention to it. I made the taller girl with a hot pink dress rather than the same muted pink as the other one as well with the striped socks to also cause comparison. In my experience being almost always the tallest in the room could feel like you're the biggest one in the room so you feel more MORE in a way. I drew the question mark next to the lesser detailed girl to convey the emotion of confusion because she has no facial features. I also drew the measuring tape to bring the topic again to height and comparison. This experience comes from a teenage girl, me, so I think it relates especially to my sustained investigation.

Grow: Now looking back on the project and looking at it I do think I could've gotten the proportions to be more accurate, though I could argue that's a stylized choice.

Glow: I love the way the coloring came out, I've only used oil pastels a handful of times so I took a pretty blind leap just jumping into it with this project.

Symbolism: I chose a reference the childhood book, "A Bad Case of Stripes", to easily communicate my message of feeling out of place and self conscious by tying it to an experience and stage of life everyone can relate too- a childhood book and puberty. Also the choice to color myself with oil pastels and the background in watercolor, because I wanted to emphasive that being out of place feeling in being literally artistically and stylistically out of place.

For this second piece, I wanted to highlight the very beginning of my acceptance journey of my Cuban identity, which is basically being born Cuban. I wanted to find a unique way to portray my dual identity so I wanted to draw my baby self being wrapped in an American flag, but, reaching out to the Cuban flag on my mother's shirt. My mother is also a key part of the piece as not only is she the one who gave me my Cuban identity, but she has always reminded me of my roots and has always taught me about my heritage. So in all from this piece, I wanted to highlight my journey while also honoring my mother. There are also little items throughout the painting that will also highlight Floridian and Cuban culture. As for medium and colors, although I used colored pencils in my sketches, I plan on making this an acrylic painting with various shading techniques and colors. Grow: I think I could have made the heart stand out more to really show the difference between the halves. I think I could have also made the ribcage larger and have it more abstract.

Glow: I like the way the hands turned out and how I used a lot of different materials. It all blended well better than I thought it would.

This artwork demonstrates the state of your heart when faced with the choice of being vulnerable and closed off. There are two hands to show the different sides and the heart is divided into two. The dull intact side is when you are closed off, you experience less but your heart stays safe. The bright damaged side is when you are open, you experience more but can get hurt in the process.

Glow: I liked how the water colors turned out mostly on the mans coat and the stringy look of his hair.

Grow: I thought that the water color could be more layered and detailed by far. Some of it seems rushed aka the grass and flowers. The style I went for wasn't 100% what I imagined it and wanted it to be everything ended up being more of a simplified look of my idea.

So, I made a vague person representing anybody distracted and focused on a purple flower with its petals around it. Grow: I definitely need to work at least a little faster in this piece and I think I should improved on that more. Another thing is I really don't like how I didn't get the necklace that green on the bottom right connor to pop out more but hopefully with the silver color it will help make it stand out more. I definitely should have erase the lines on the papers that are outline cause now they kinda smudge with the colors and make it difficult to erase.

Glow: Looking back on some art work of mine I definitely have improved on making things in color more realism. I also think I have improved in drawing more tiny details in color and mixing colors to get what I need for the drawing.

Symbolism: All the rings, red roses, and white pearls that is represented on the drawing is actually from my great-great grandmother so they all represent a part of the 20th century from 1920s to 1970s, making them have a lot of history behind them and can show what most people probery wore back then when they were alive. The green butterfly necklace on the bottom right middle corner is actually my mom when she younger around the late 1990s. Most of the jewelry is gold to give it an old look or it's what I was trying to go for in the project I also did add some silver to help pop out the other gold jewelry.

learned in SI from piece: I learned that emotions can have similarities from their source. For example sadness and anger can be the emotion a person has when they're upset, they can cry or get mad. So in this piece I wanted to make a connection between the two, both the emotions create a sense of alertness or fear for a person as they're both tied to being a negative emotion.

Symbolism: The cartoon Voltez V represents childhood in Cuba, as my parents and the kids in Cuba today grew up with this show. Although I is Japanese, the Cuban government allowed for it to be played and so by watching this show as a child I felt connected wit not only the country but the people. It was also the first show I watched in Spanish as a kid so the ties that a show I grew up knowing in Spanish, wasn't to other people only shows my ties to my Cuban culture/heritage.

Materials used: Although in the sketches I did use Prisma colored pencil, in the actual work I will be using alcoholic & paint markers for designing.

What I learned: What I was able to learn about my SI was just the importance this cartoon my parents loved had over the entire nation of Cuba as a whole. It gave children hope to be rebellious and have a hero to look up to which in retrospect, I think was the very reason why my parents showed this to me while growing up. They wanted to show me their hero and inspiration for living a free life here in the States.

Symbolism: I used different emotions and complementary colors to represent the confusion that can be caused when you try to share emotions. It is hard to share how you really feel and it feels like you are holding a mask and not being the real you. But it also shows that it is easier to put i[ these masked emotions.

I've learned the types of Russian Traditional clothes and when they originated. Russian traditional dress began to develop as a specific form in the 9th century. Until the early 18th century, peasants and boyars (noblemen) wore traditional costumes. There are two major types of Russian Traditional dresses- the sarafan and the poneva.A sarafan is a loosely fitting long jumper dress worn over a long linen shirt and belted. The poneva costume is considered to be the more ancient of the two. It consisted of the plaid or striped poneva skirt gathered on a string or wrapped around the hips, a long loosely fitting shirt with embroidered sleeves and an apron heavily decorated with lace and colorful trims.

My artwork is a diptych piece with two faces holding a mask up to their faces. The emotions behind each mask represent how you really feel, and the mask is the emotion that you present to other people. On the left the face is annoyed and the mask is happy. On the right side, the face is sad and the mask is angry. The background is dark brown with abstract lines in a lighter brown. I used Oil pastels for this project to show the chaotic and messy nature of feelings and how it's hard to control. I added bright colors that are complementary to each other to show how opposite they can feel. The background has random abstract lines to emphasize the messiness.

For instance, the middle will show a war with someone in the Connor of the panel crying while before I want to show how people were happy and all colorful in there dresses and with suits and top hats, with big puffy clothes. For my 4th project I would like to do something about advertising a food or beauty product they don’t have today. For example I know there use to be a green makeup people would use back then but later on they learned it became very toxic and many would end up dying because they put that on their faces. So I would like to go for the 1960s as they are well known for advertising very colorful things especially about cooking whether that was cupcakes or a new invented recipe. The drawing that I have one the right is a lady dress as a maid in the 1960s who is cooking a cake and making frosting, one of the references I would like to conduct more research on is the movie called “The Help” as it based off in the 1960s. The materials I would like to use on this is paint for sure as I think it would help give off that pop of color off. I will probably most likely use acrylic paint since it shows it bright colors off really well, I also would like to add some dramatic movements in the piece and big words. My piece uses a photograph of a reflection in a puddle located in a city/town like environment (Somewhat similar to the previous piece). Normally containing people walking and their reflections but, in this case our main character only exists in the reflection separate from the real world, free to do as he pleases.

My materials I plan on using are most likely watercolor. As much as possible I want to mimic the reflective water look but I may experiment with acrylic depending on how watercolor goes.

In this piece I learned about some core beliefs in philosophies and settled on making every piece and my whole investigation on the beliefs that go behind human action. Or in simple terms the "Why?" people live or do the things they do.

The doll in this piece will symbolize how people expect you to be perfect and feminine as a woman. I will have the mouth cracked and the rest of the doll imperfect to show your emotions trying to escape and fighting to change the stereotype. For The background, I plan to have eyes in photo frames to represent the feeling of being watched and judged. I tried out watercolor and colored pencil. I am going to use colored pencil because I can add more shading and details that will add more emotion to my piece. In this piece I learned how many women feel this way and its a vulnerable topic that most can relate to. Its hard for us, as women to express ourselves without being judged or feeling like we are being critiqued. We feel like we have to be perfect all the time.

This piece is going to depict me, and two arms grabbing me, and painting over me. They're painting black and white stripes over my colorful ones, symbolizing how society forces those who are different to conform to the norm in order to be widely accepted. By losing the color that makes me unique, I am being stripped away of my identity and individuality. It is inspired by the book, a bad case of stripes by David Shannon.

I am thinking to either do digital or acrylic for this piece, I think the colors will be very bright and vibrant this way and convey that dramatic difference of color and grayscale.

Symbolism: In this piece for my investigation, I wanted to explore the importance of music and its connection to cultural upbringing and formation. In the middle, I am my middle school self dancing to the music as during that time was era where I actually took the time to learn and explore my heritage and music was my first step. To me, music is one of the most important things in my life so it was a great entry way into my culture. Coming out of the headphones is almost like a stream which I wanted to include little instruments and feelings that I hear when listening to Cuban music. Including stuff like Clave, Congas, Shekere, and etc. Lastly, I am wearing a traditional Cuban Salsa dress to fully embrace the life of the music.

Materials used: For the sketch I used colored pencil and graphite but for the actual thing I will be using oil pastel & graphite to sketch.

What I learned: I learned that a lot of Cuban music uses instruments from not only African origin but Spanish as well.

Glow: I really liked how I the stream from the headphones turned out!The shading was on point with the oil pastels and the body composition was really good.

Grow: I believe I could've made the background more cleaner and for the instruments & dancers, I could have made them look more realistic in texture.

Symbolism: In the artwork, there is a younger version of myself dancing to Cuban music which is coming out of the headphones in an almost waterstream-like way. Within the stream, there are instruments, vibrant colors, singers, and dancer to help enhance not only what I am hearing but the emotions I felt when listening to Cuban music for the first time. The dancing position my younger self is in is common in salsa which I guess can symbolize my beginning to teach myself salsa.

For this project, I wanted to represent the bones in my work in a more light-hearted and meaningful way. Often times when we present bones they tend to be in a grim and dark light; in my work im using bones in a honorable manner and as a representation of the person in my family who was the embodiment of Cuban culture in my family, my grandpa. Although he is no longer with us, my relationship with him was one of the core motivations to connect with my Cuban roots and it was through him that I was able to connect with family in Cuba. For his skeleton, they will be in the colors of the Cuban flag to highlight the love for Cuba in his veins and I will still present him with clothes and next to my younger self to make it seem that no matter where he is, his memory still lives on. As for the overall strcuture of the work, I wanted to make the artwork seem like a polaroid photograph!

This piece revolves around the people's use of god as their justification for their actions. In this case I did an easy and simple example of an "angel" and implied that it has killed someone with the justification that it was carrying out gods will. (Less of a bone study since I did bones previously but does carry similar themes)

I experimented with the use of black and red ballpoint pens along with charcoal to fill in white space. I enjoy the sketchy and detailed look a ballpoint pen can accomplish with different types of hatching and cross hatching.

My next few pieces aren't going to be using as much research and deep thinking as my previous 4. My goal with these last 4 is to balance the portfolio out by discussing very very simple and straightforward ideas. In this case the belief behind human action here is God's Will / Religious belief.

In SI#5 I want to display the triggers and environments dissociation is present in.

Being alone in a empty, large space often triggers dissociation. I aim to portray that in this piece.

I plan to do this piece if acrylic paint to give it a heavy feel. I want the piece to feel and gives the audience the feeling of something weighing down on them. With acrylic being a heavy and foggy medium, this will achieve what I want it too.

This pencil drawing depicts a figure curled in a fetal position on a bed with their face hidden and hair cascading. there is really rough handwriting saying "why not me", showing self doubt and loneliness, visually representing one's internal monologue. The figure is vulnerable and the placement of the phrases to convey a sense of introversion, anxiety, and internal conflict. The use of pencil as a medium, with its raw quality, enhances the feeling of capturing an unresolved emotional struggle. Grow: To be honest this piece was originally going to be done fully colored and traditionally but I had really severe art block when I was making this and ended up doing it monochromatic and digitally instead. I wish I would have colored it fully though. Glow: Despite this, I do like how it looks. Especially the anatomy on the third rectangle and the wolf on the second. I also think the colors fit the emotions well. My concept was meant to represent 3 tarot cards I got when given a reading prior to starting the project. Since this project was meant to be a triptych, I decided to represent a past, present, and future. And how growing up isn't always as bad as it looks.

Lavender Marriage

Something I wanted to convey with this piece is the concept of Lavender Marriages and how they work. Its sort of a bittersweet concept, marrying someone you arent attracted too but feels similar emotions to you so that you guys can be with who you really wanna be on the side, its sort of a loophole to the system.

As I stated in the post, I wanted to highlight the first time I went to Cuba to really show the journey of my acceptance. Visiting my roots for the first time really opened my eyes not only to who I truly am but that I have family in Cuba who know of and love me no matter where I was born. The rest of the crowd is immersed in darkness, oblivious to the lone figure’s presence, creating a sharp contrast between connection and isolation. The spotlight symbolizes the figure’s vulnerability, both seen and ignored in the crowd. Description:

This piece takes the concept of people's need and pursuit for perfection, in most cases a destructive manner and amplifies it to correlate with modern philosophies. This piece aims to emphasize the extreme measures people tend to take in pursuit of "perfection" a subjective and near impossible task to achieve.

Ideas/Symbolism:

I used a layering of warm colors and black to portray the destructive atmosphere, alongside small building like structures to further showcase the destruction. Our character is one in pursuit of perfection and will do anything it takes to achieve it, represented by the strict and formal stance he takes. The king, queen, and other cards fall before him as the joker card hovers over him as his goals are foolish. Many symbols of perfection are also present from the bible, being the number 7. 7 Cards, 7 Stars, the 7 of of aces etc.

Synthesis/Materials:

The main material I used was acrylic paint for the background and buildings as it was easy and fitting to create a blended and coherent setting. Micron brush pens were used for the character outlines and card outlines to give a sharp look. Finally, a little use of ballpoint pen to create the color and style on the cards itself.

This artwork is very personal to me as its about my grandfather who recently passed. Most of my research was done by looking at old photo of my and my grandpa along with speaking with family members about his and I relationship as a family. He was always very sick when I was way older so I never got to really spend as much time with him as I would’ve as a child. But through all of our memories he was the one that introduced me to my Cuban culture along side my family and by embraced Cuba the most in our family. So for the bones, I colored them in the Cuban flag colors and put the Cuban flag in his heart to help symbolize that message. The main takeaway from the work is that its a recreation of a cherished photo of me and my grandpa, the work is made to look like a Polaroid what would belong to a child.

As for materials, I mainly used watercolor to help not only give a sense of flow throughout the work but also help give it that youthful/kid-like feel to the photo graph to make it seem like a child did it. Since its me as a child in there.

For my SI#6 I really wanted to experiment with materials and try something new like adding fabric pieces since it's a 2D Design class. This artwork is set in the Russian Empire time period which was heavily influenced by Western Europe, more particularly France, which is also seen through the style of clothes. I wanted to show a big gown which was common in the aristocracy of that time period and through fabric showcase the Western Influence which can be seen in juxtaposition with my previous artworks which can be seen not just through fabric and materials, but also through patterns and shapes.

Glow: I think the 3 colors I used convey the feeling I was trying to express really well, and creates a good contrast from my other pieces. It reminds me of a graphic novel or old book illustration. This artwork demonstrates my investigation because the skeleton is in distress on its knees with its heart in its hands. This is a representation of what can happen after you are vulnerable. The skeleton represents the feeling of being dead and being taken advantage of feeling like its heart has been ripped out of it and crumbling. I used Acrylic paint for this project to have a blurry dramatic effect. I want the skeleton to be the main focus with the heart tying in the background that has touches of red. I want the eyes to go all around the painting and to feel the pain that I am trying to represent.

The piece shows dissociation, the environment it is present in, and a symbolic representation of how it feels. I used different layering techniques and perspective to emphasize the main figures in the piece. The other details are there, just more minuscule to show how large dissociation is in the mind of the holder.

I did this piece fully digitally using sketch and spray paint brushes.

The progress picture is digital, but depending on how it comes out I might switch to traditional methods in order to achieve the look I want. The water and minimal surroundings are the main focus, as I want the main focus to be clear, but still have there be more to the overall picture. Light and dark colors are being used as contrast.

Back in the day, many LGBTQ individuals were reffered to by the f-slur, F*g. This was because they would be rolled in carpets and burned like cigarettes. With this piece, I want to convey this tragic history by showing me, smoking a cigarette, and the cigarette would be me. This is to represent how I try to get rid of this part of myself .

Description: My real-self (my expectations) shocked at the realization that she's straining my cartoon self (my creative expression) to the point of exhaustion. This is symbolized by having me pulling cartoon me through a mirror.

Idea: The tone of the piece is supposed to encapsulate a jarring shock and guilt, realizing that all of the themes in my pieces from previously stem from the root of my own expectations and that I am my own worst enemy.

Description: This piece takes the image of a overconfident person lets say, and revolves around the idea of the overinflation of ones ego. In other words, the piece refers to the ideas of Egoism and reflects on the positive confidence and negative actions that can come with it.

Idea and Process: Inspired by the show Invincible, however, takes a random human form using watercolor to emphasize highlights and shadows featured in the piece. The main feature being the split of personality or belief of the person, a mundane, normal, and overconfident personality. Constantly pushing over the boundary between confidence and overconfidence, shown by the black and red, in an exaggerated tone.

Materials: Only uses watercolor, however, attempts to feature different tones and techniques of brush strokes to create a sense of depth. Furthermore, leaving negative space between areas to create an exaggerated highlight in the light and dark spaces.

This piece is the culmination of my SI, a depiction of my younger self in a graduation cap and gown, being asked the question all children are when they're young. Representing how Im still the person I was when I was young, and I havent changed completely.
