I think this meme really captures the tension every language teacher feels to correct every single mistake vs. the tact to let it go and keep the conversation flowing. For me, in a lesson, fluency and communication matter more than perfect accuracy.

I have chosen this picture because it shows the fact that, sometimes, the use of technical terms or metalanguage in the English class may make the students feel worried about having to interpret the grammar rules underlying a new language point.

I think this meme represents how students often view the teaching of grammar: they become lost and confused the moment the teacher mentions the word “grammar.” This may happen because the introduction of grammatical structures does not always follow Ur’s (1991) view that grammar presentation should be clear, accurate and, most importantly, simple. I chose this cartoon because it reflects how many times students’ feelings, ideas, or messages are overshadowed by the focus on grammatical form and accuracy. In the cartoon, the boy writes “The boy hated grammar,” which expresses his emotions clearly, but the teacher ignores the meaning and only comments on the sentence structure by saying that it has “a subject and a predicate.” This shows the tension in grammar teaching that Ur (1991) describes: whether grammar should be the central focus of language learning or simply a tool to support communication.
