Salutary Neglect

Since the 1600s, the British followed the policy of salutary neglect which allowed colonies local self-rule. When parliament tried to push taxes onto the colonies, they objected because of this.

Townshend Acts (1767)

The British started imposing taxes on British-made goods which included glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. This led to the smuggling of goods from other countries like tea from the Dutch. Colonists also started to boycott British-made goods and women wove their own cloth.

The Boston Tea Party

On December 16, 1773, the boycott of British goods worsened financial problems for the British East India Company, so parliament passed a law to sell directly to colonists. Colonists believed that the British were trying to trick them into paying the tax, so the Patriots known as the "Sons of Liberty" boarded British ships with tea and dumped it into the Boston harbor.

The Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre happened in March of 1770. The reason for the massacre was due to retaliation for the British Crown sending 4,000 troops of soldiers to occupy the small population of 16,000 people in Boston. One night, a group of colonists launch snowballs and rocks at a group of British soldiers guarding the Custom House. Soldiers fired out of fear and instinct, killing five colonists. Crispus Attucks was one of these victims, a Native American and African American individual who was rumored to escape slavery. This made it worse for the colonists, eventually causing their protest at the Boston Tea Party in 1773.
