P. 36

1. Yes, second language learners always know at least one language by definition.

2. Their congnitive maturity depends on their age.

3. At a young age, children have some metalingustic awareness (when they say a sentence sounds "silly"). To what extent they can perform these tasks depends on their age and the amount of time they have been exposed to the language,

4. Young children have less knowledge of the world than adolescents and adults. Being aware of and having experience with compensatory strategies can help them figure out what a second language interlocutor is saying, even though their language may be limited.

5. They younger the person, the less they care about making mistakes. They older they get, the more self-conscious they may be.

6. Younger children are not forced to use a language until they are ready, whereas an adult using a second language at work may be forced to in order to do their job.

7. The amount of time available to learn a second language depends on their age and situation.
