Brainstorming_ group activity: 1) As a group, go back to your notes on “The Evil Eye Expert.” 2) Choose a meaning (based on the list we've generated in class), and 3) start writing ideas you think may be connected to that (check Kirszner 38-40 for a model).

I never had private lessons when I was a child."

We also see a type of resentment towards her mother from Juliet in the story.

She talks about that her mom calls Aynur Hanım when she doesn't cook. And she mentions Nona's cooking in an elaborate way as if she is praising Nona because she cooks for her while Ester doesn't.

She says that she loves Monday afternoons, that is probably because her mother takes her to eat ice-cream. In other words, she loves Mondays because she spends quality time with her mother.

There seems to be a strained relationship between Nona and Esther as well, Esther almost acts like a teenager that got scolded by her mom as she slams her bedroom door.

Juliet also shows signs of attention seeking and jealousy towards Selma, which manifests through her blue satin shoes but the underlaying cause of this jealousy is perhaps the fact that Selma has a big, "proper" family.

Esther does not believe Juleit, claiming she is faking her illness, which is another sign of their strained relationship.

To exemplify, Muhtar Bey, a Muslim man, suggests getting help from a priest instead of an imam and the priest helps the family even though they are Jewish.
The priest is fasting in solidarity even though Christianity doesn't require fasting. He does this because he is invited over for iftar, which shows his respect.
Although they are not from the same cultural group, Ester (Mother) gave Juliet's shoes to their Muslim neighbor.
Juliet's family eats the food Muhtar Bey's wife cooks. Though they pay for the food, the fact that they eat the same food shows an interaction between them.
