This claim provides another opinion on the view of anti-maskers one that isn't negative. This makes the audience more diverse, (people want to hear what they agree with, and will believe those who state things that they believe in). This establishes the appeal of ethos, but more logos. It's logical to think that what is happening is new, although people want to act like it's something they can handle and can make good decisions on - we are all in the same boat. This is new for everyone.

This comparison by using the HIV epidemic makes the reader think about Covid and how they're both very similar when it comes to the stigma. If someone has covid, its common not to want to see the person, but in many cases it comes to a point where actions and emotions towards the person with the virus may change. This is also very prevalent to the asian hate especially towards the Chinese community. By many people believing conspiracy theories about how China created covid, this caused separation and segregation in different forms. This evidence of the HIV epidemic makes Warzel seem very logical, bringing in yet another example of what has happened in the past. Shows that Warzel wants to understand every viewpoint (logos), and not judge. This shows credibility because he seems unbiased, so the reader feels that the information is coming straight from the source.
