You will use Padlet to practice Quote analysis (it would be great to follow the SAY MEAN MATTER format for your analysis--but you will write it out as a paragraph). Each group member needs to analyze at least 2 quotes from Part II, and make sure each group member analyzes different quotes.

"In general you could not assume that you were much safer in the country than in London. There were no telescreens, of course, but there was always the danger of concealed microphones by which your voice might be picked up and recognized; besides, it was not easy to make a journey by yourself without attracting attention."

In book two, Winston knows that even though there is no telescreen in sight it does not mean that the party will not be watching them. Most people would be too scared to even try to go against the party because they feel fear brought to them through the posters of Big Brother and the Two-minute hate session.
This matters because it shows the totalitarian society the people of Oceania live in. This proves that no person is allowed freedom to do as they wish. Even those who are willingly against the party are kept under control. As we saw in the ministry of love that the people who did not care were even treated differently because they knew that they would not be changed but in order to keep them from influencing the people outside they keep them locked up.

"You can turn it off!" he said."Yes," said O'Brien, "we can turn it off. We have that privilege"

In book two chapter eight, Winston and Julia go to O'Brien's home. O'Brien is part of the inner party and he, unlike the outer party, is allowed to turn off the telescreen in his home. Winston was surprised when he saw that it was possible for them to turn off the telescreen, even if it was for a few minutes. This means that for most of the outer members of the party they were common people who were all the same. Every one of them lived in fear of being watched by Big Brother. The inner party is there because they belong there.

The inner party has some privileges that the outer party does not. They are allowed some privacy if they wish to have it. The party had taken away anything that would give people independence or individuality. In the beginning of the book, it explained how not everyone was meant to be in the inner party and they could not be born into it. All the members of the inner party have to prove that they belong there. This is a clue that would tell the readers that O'Brien would not be able to be part of the brotherhood because he was more likely to be watched. It foreshadows the betrayal towards Winston.

"The room was a world, a pocket of the past where extinct animals could walk."

Winston is referring to himself and Julia as "extinct animals" because that being in that room is like they're somehow living the way that was supposed to be banned by the Party. They're in a way connected to the past because they have love for each other and feelings and emotions. Having feelings and emotions towards another person is not ideal for the Party, so typically the Party will not allow a couple to be together if they have an attraction to one another.

Winston is in a sense living like an "extinct animal" because no other Party member is daring to live the way they want, he and Julia are like the last of their kind being together because of their love for one another. The room is the only place where they're allowed to confess their true feelings for one another, this is why Winston feels like this a new world. They would never be able to show an attraction in public. The room upstairs is their safe place, it is where they are allowed to love one another without any limitations. They feel free in the room to do whatever they'd like, which is what people of the past did so he may also be referring to these people as "extinct animals."

"They simply swallowed everything, and what they swallowed did them no harm, because it left no residue behind, just as grain of corn will pass undigested through the body of a bird."

This is how the Party control's its people. They lie to citizens of Oceania and change facts and records when a new claim is mad by them. They wipe out all factual evidence of them being wrong, and replace it with their lies. Everything they wish to destroy or alter can be vaporized and taken out of existence forever. They also get rid of people who are a threat to the totalitarian government. The intelligence of certain citizens can be a threat to the Party, and since they do not want these same bad thoughts to spread among others, they capture the intelligent for Thoughtcrime or any other crimes they wish and vaporize them.

Before these people are vaporized, the Party is very careful to "cure their insanity" and make them change their beliefs in order to comply with those of the Party. Their ways of thought are altered before they are executed, until they all have a profound love for Big Brother and no further wishes to go against him. The people who chose to remain ignorant are therefore not in any harm, because they are obeying all the lies the Party feeds them and they are able to make it true in their minds by using Doublethink. He mentions the bird in order to create imagery in which one can imagine that the grain of corn will not do any harm to be bird, but it will just stay in it's stomach because it can not be digested. It will not be able to pass all the way through to the other side, however it will not be rejected.

"She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that the only victory lay in the far future, long after you were dead, that from the moment of declaring war on the Party it was better to think of yourself as a corpse. 'We are the dead,' he said."

Winston insists that Julia “does not understand that there is no such thing as happiness”. He says this because they are in a place where their freedom has been taken away from them. Since he is one of the few question the government, the knows that this is not a place to live in and that people should start to understant this. He realizes that in order for someone to successfully defeat the Party, it would come at a cost. Just by him saying that “in the far future” we can say that he doesn't think it would happen any time soon but rather after they are dead. His last words, “better to think of yourself as a corpse” could possibly be foreshadowing about their future together.

In Book 2, Winston is talking to Juilia and telling her that he is going to stop following orders from the Party. He is sick of not having his freedom and also because he can not be with the girl he likes. Since they have succesfully controlled everyone's way of thinking, they have won. However, Winston is willing to fight for what he believes in. Death may be a possibility but he knows that and has accepted that fact. He takes pride in what he does and having the ability to think freely is what keeps him motivated. what ever may happen in the end, his thoughts will survive within him. Inside his mind.

They feel as if they only need each other. It brings a lot of tension into to room because for something like that to happen there must be a thing going on between those two people. What it's trying to say in general is that when you are with the right person nothing can hurt you because you have the right person with you.

Anyone showing a slight disregard for the war effort is put into their place as subservients. Also, it shows how much power the government wants. It wants everyone, including the proles, to always speak kindly of the government; never be apathetic about any decision made by the government. Basically, it wants complete control of its people.

"Even the one plan that was practicable, suicide, they had no intention of carrying out. To hang on from day to day and from week to week, spinning out a present that had no future, seemed an unconquerable instinct, just as one's lungs will always draw the next breath so long as there is air available."

Winston and Julia can't tell anyone or they will be persecuted or tortured until they no longer love each other. Suicide was an option for them to continue their love affair without the need to have a secret meet-up and forget what the moments they shared together. Having thought that suicide is an option, it means they sincerely hate the way the government prohibits sexual intercourse or any form of affection towards one another.
