"steam rising from a wet sink as a hot frying pan is laughingly tossed into it" when I read this I imagine the sound of water hitting a hot pan that was used to make bacon, and I hear the loud sizzle as the hot grease mixes with the water. I would describe this mood as relaxed as someone is possibly cleaning the pan.

"Some emotions speed it up, others slow it down; occasionally, it seems to go missing—until the eventual point when it really does go missing, never to return. "

In these sentences the author is saying time waits for no one. Like the saying "time flies when you're having fun" and times goes slower when you want to be somewhere else, or your mind is somewhere else. Once that time is up you won't get it back.

“History is the lies of the victors,” when I read this I think of how every story has a different point of view. I would describe the mood as exited and proud because the student responded quickly and was sure of his answer.
