Back in the 16th Century it was a cultural activity and was adopted by the masses of that culture. Then as Brazil grew in the 18th Century and more slaves were imported, increasing social life. This allowed Capoeria to be taught and practiced among more people. It is now an active exporter for Brazilian culture. Unfortunately I have discovered, it is not as popular over here and one of the least heard of martial arts.

Capoeira I would say is a social dance. It held influence on the slave community. Interestingly in the class it was very white dominated considering it's origin.

Capoeira has a strong historical and cultural background. It makes me feel very strongly that people need to be made aware of it's history whilst taking part if not before, instead of only using it to keep fit. Heres a few questions I raised, via a Facebook group:
1. Why did you start Capoeira?
2. Did you know it's history before you started and how has this developed since starting?
3. Do you see it as a dance form or a martial art?
4. What is it that you like about Capoeira? (Or dislike)
I had an amazing response...

Conclusion...

So to answer my most important question, do participants really know what Capoeira is about? The result is a very strong yes. Everyone in the class knew what it was about and very open to learning more as well as passing on their knowledge. Capoeira started as a fight technique, this technique solidly used to separate whites and coloured people. Now this social dance is a form of cultural hybridity. People’s influences to take part weren’t necessarily for cultural reasons and I’m intrigued by the varying degrees of cultural backgrounds of this class however only one of them coming from Brazil. I got a very strong sense of community. As well as being a strong storyteller for a very important part of history.
